Which AK/ARs are CA legal?

Okay, so I have to move San Diego. I am loath to not have either an AK or AR, as he they are some of my favorite firearms. I have done some research and I know there are "Off-List" AK and ARs that are CA legal, but I cannot find a comprehensive list of all the manufactures and models. CA legal AKs and ARs are way pricey and I would really like to be able to comparison shop thoroughly, so that I can find the best deal.

BTW, what are the rules for owning an AK or AR with a detachable magazine?

Please help.
 
Just found a thread in THR on a similar topic. They are right. I'm just gonna buy an M1A. No worries or no strange configuration just the real thing.

It can take a while to wrap one's brain around it. Have you taken a look at the Commercial Sales forum on that site? The vendors have a good idea of what's legal in California. Cold War Shooters is particularly helpful.

The short version for ARs and AKs is that if the make/model is not explicitly banned, it's legal if it has a non-detachable 10-round magazine (kits such as the Prince 50 exist to facilitate this). Alternately, you can have a detachable mag as long as the off-list rifle does not have any of the evil features (pistol grip, collapsible stock, flash suppressor, etc.). A Monsterman grip is available as a legal replacement for the pistol grip.

On the other hand, you could simply buy an M1A. :)

Just make sure you know the difference between a muzzle brake and a flash hider.

Oh wait, I am not sure the CA DOJ knows the difference........

There are a few legal ways to configure an AR to be CA legal. Talk to my friend Chris @ www.LANworldinc.com He offers Stag and other off list uppers & lowers that are CA legal.

Good point. According to this one group of guys that lived some 231 years ago, ANY weapon is legal to own in the United States.

If you asked the founders this same question they would give you the correct answer: All AKs are legal in California. What is NOT legal, nor constitutional, nor moral, nor reasonable are the laws of California regarding arms for free men.

If it has a detachable mag, it cant have any other evil features. No flash hider, pistol grip, forward grip, collasping stock, etc. Here are some ideas of what a Cali AR would be like.

When you build your own rifle, you need to start with a receiver that isnt banned. http://ag.ca.gov/firearms/infobuls/kaslist.pdf

I just skipped all the BS and got a M1A.
 
Hey, thanks for the help right now I am still thinking the M1A but the California Rifles U15 stock kit with an off list receiver has some appeal too. I really dislike the idea of a fixed mag.

Anyone know about AK options? I may just buy a mini-30 but I do so love Russian rifles.

You can get an AR with monsterman grip, Muzzle break, Fixed A2 stock and still use detachable magazines. I specifically had one configured this way to take advantage of all the 20 & 30 round Pre-ban mags I've had before 94.

And Keltec makes the SU-16, which takes AR mags.

The good news about the AK is that you can get one with a "sporter" stock, like the Saiga rifles come with...

This is true. There are gun shops here stocking them on the shelves.

People should understand that the legal RAAC Saigas are pretty much the same as the banned Kalishnikov USA Saigas. There's a chance you could end up in cuffs if a LEO who doesnt understand the intracies of CA AW laws sees the rifle.

Each person needs to know the potential risks and decide if it's worth it.
