So I've got a 452 Lux on order. Any .22 LR ammo suggestions to get started with? Going to keep iron sights on it. No scoping.

Going cheap, we've been most impressed with the 330 bulk Winchester from Wally-world, about $10 for 330 rounds. But just last night I ordered 2500 CCI mini-mags from Sportsmanguide for my new,un-fired CZ 452 American with Weaver V16.( waitin' on sunday !!! )
At the Wally, they'd run $175. I used a $10-off coupon, SG shipped for free and doubled my club discount if I'd renew ( it had just expired) and I got 2500 Mini_mags on the way AND my annual membership for $160 total.:D You could probably pull off the same deal with a phone call. A valid coupon code till sept. 30 is...SG697.
If you want what seems to be regarded in many circles as the best .22 match ammo around, chase down some Wolf Target Match. Same logo and black box as the AK ammo, but brass cased and made in Germany. Also, expensive and often out of stock. Best price I've seen is at Cheaperthandirt, about $45 for 500 rds. but they're famous for outrageous shipping, and it's out of stock.
Them there's my recommendations !!

here are the best, most readily available, and mostly cheapest, in no particular order. These typically if asked by dudes who shoot rimfire alot(like me), will tell you , that across the board , with many diff rimfire rifles, these will give you great results.
eley ammo-many types
aguila -many types
golden eagle
remmington, orange box or yellow box.
All the above are made by eley, in diff countries.
then you have cci- many types.
wolf- which is also sk/lapua/etc.
american eagle red box- which is made by federal.
stay away from ALL OTHER REMINGTON AMMO!!!!
for bulk box ammo, try diff types of winchester, and federal
stay away from any CCI BULK AMMO!!!!
with all the dif types of eley, cci, and aguila, this list has about 40 or so diff types of ammo for you to check, and it should all be under 5 bucks per box, unless you start buying the really expensive eley ammo, which can go for 10 bucks a box.

For target matches, I shoot SK Rifle Match out of my Lux; Eley Sport (if you can find it) shoots almost as well. Any of the Federal rounds seem to find their mark, as does CCI Std. Best thing to do is pick up a few brands and spend time at the range shooting off the bench. You'll soon see which your gun likes. BTW, sooner or later you're likely to want to scope that rifle. When you do, head over to the CZ forum at Rimfire Central (but come back here!) to see what mounts and scopes experienced shooters are using on their CZs.

Great info here, re .22lr ammo, since I just got a brandnew and not yet fired CZ 452 Lux.

Maybe, I can get you guys to elaborate a bit more on specifics regarding the ammos listed.

I did buy 2 bricks of Remington 'Golden Bullet'. I understand, those are low price ammo. How would those negatively effect the new rifle?

I can always shoot those in my H&R 904 revolver or donate to the Junior Club.

Again, not to steer folks away from THR, but rimfire shooting is quite different from its centerfire counterpart. Hence sites like RFC mentioned in my previous post. Check it out and you'll see forums for almost every rimfire rifle/handgun made, plus ones for ammo and optics as well. That site and THR keep me up to date. That said, Win and Federal bulk should shoot well for you, and not break your budget.

.22s are finicky and have individual taste. I tried a few and have been very pleased with 40 grain Winchester Dynapoints. In my area Dick's has them for around $20 for the box of 525.

Mine won't wear a scope either. They have the best iron sights. Better than all my milsurps. When you find the right ammo, it's scary how accurate they can be. Good luck.

remington ammo, except for the eley made orange and yellow boxes, is typically this; the most non symetrical, non concentric, not crimped the same way, loosest, dirtiest, velocity changing ammo you are ever going to buy. Even if you find a type of remmy ammo that shoots well in your rifle, and is cheap, you will proly get two things for sure; a lot of misfires, and one hell of a dirty, gummed up weapon. That is why , except for the mentioned orange and yellow boxes, we rimfire shooters would rather eat glass, than go through a bunch of remmy ammo, through one of our prized toys...

My CZ452 seems to really like RWS Subsonic HP ammo. It shoots it into just a little over an inch at 100 yds.

You may need to try a pretty good variety of ammos to see what works best in yours.

Mine likes American Eagle. They also shoot a lot of it at the local 4-H shoots. Most of the guns there are CZ's.

Eley Tenex shot very well from my 453 but the price takes the fun out of it. Was surprised how Tenex's cheap little brother, Eley Sport did. Bought a big lot of it and for the price it does very well for me. As mentioned earlier, stay away from the Remington brand. You might want to try some but most likely wou'll find that what others have said is pretty close to the absolute truth.

You have to try a box of as many brands as you can to find the ammo your rifle shoots best. No two, even two consecutively serial numbers rifles, will shoot the same ammo the same way.

Thanks for the info. I realize that everyone is unique. I reload. However, new to the rimfire thing. Mostly just wanted to see what to avoid and what to start with. If, down the road, I want a scoped .22, I'll just pick up a CZ 452 American... I think I'll enjoy an inexpensive to shoot iron sight rifle. Looking forward to getting back to the basics.

Citadel;

Another ammo that's worked well for me has been Winchester's PowerPoints. Alas, it's getting fairly spendy these days too. About $30.00 a brick. But, it gives near match accuracy in several of my .22's with a hollowpoint bullet. I do a lot of serious varmint shooting with it.

FWIW, my CZ likes the American Eagle best. Which is a shame because it's starting to show considerable velocity variation with the last batch I tested.

I was afraid that this would be the response on the Rem Bulk ammo (golden bullet)

It is particularly the buildup of dirt I am concerned with ... I guess I have to swallow those 'golden Bullets' :D

I went to Wallymart and brought back a 550 pack Federal, plated Hollow Points. Winchester 333 Pack and 2x100 CCI packs.

Maybe I'll fire some of those "golden bullets" through my H&R 904, that should be easier to clean.

Thanks folks, great talking point here, specially since I'm a greenhorn with the .22lr rimfire.

dont forget, if you need more info, go to rimfirecentral.com, where all the rimfire junkies hang out, and not a bunch of stuck up , look down their noses at newbie , freaks neither!!!!
lemme show you some groups, at 100 yds, through a marlin mod 60 of mine, that are typical, with some of the above mentioned ammo; don't worry if you cant pull off 100 yd groups this tight with your rig yet, I got lucky and got an exceptionally accurate mod 60 here. Plus the scope is a 24 power.
