Which M1903 Springfield should I get from CMP? I do not want an A3 nor do I want a low-serial number. CMP lists 3 that fit this:
-M1903 Manufactured by Springfield Armory. High serial number. S type stock.
-M1903 Manufactured by Remington. S type stock.
-M1903 Manufactured by Springfield Armory. High serial number. S type stock. Mark I Model.

They are all $500 each. This will be a shooter, not a safe queen. I'm looking for one that most closely resembles this picture of my grandfather from WWII: http://my.hamilton.net/~richballas/grandpa with rifle.jpg

Thanks!!!

Any of the rifles available will resemble Grandpa's rifle; it is not possible to tell the manufacturer from a photo. However, you have another problem...

You say: This will be a shooter, not a safe queen.

CMP says: Bores will be dark with little or no rifling.

You might get lucky, CMP rates conservatively and I have heard of people getting decent barrels this year, but you cannot count on it.

If you get one as bad as stated, you could rebarrel. Or you could pay a speculator for a nicer basic gun.

I got an M1917 last year that had a corroded bore. You can see the rifling, but it is far from shiny and rough. It will do about 6 inch groups.

That rifle looks like an M1903 though.
