Which generation Glock?

Thinking of finally getting a polymer pistol. More than likely a used Glock 23. So does it matter if it is a first, second or third generation? Or do I just go with the best deal I can find? Any info appreciated.

I prefer the ones w/o finger grooves, but that's just me.
Just avoid the ones w/ a serial number that starts w/ an "E", or maybe an "F" too, and you'll be just fine.

Seriously, I don't like the ones w/ the finger grooves either, but you should try on a few (gen 1, 2, 3 & 3.2) and get the one that fits & feels best.

A wood rasp, auto body putty file or a belt sander should take care of those!

I'd say shoot them first if you can, to see what you like. And any should be fine, just be sure any upgrades have been done. FWIW, my favorite Glock .40 is the gen 2 G23.

Longbow, I dont think the F series frames were affected by the frame rail problem, unless you know something I don't.

As long as it's not an 'E' serial, you should ge fine. I have a 2nd Gen G19 that's been ace as long as I've had it ('92).

I did not really like Glocks until the finger groove versions came out. The finger groove versions just feel better in my hand and I can shoot them better than the non-grooved versions.

Any Glock with a serial number beginning with "E" may be affected by the "non-recall" recall. You would need to call Glock with the serial number to see if that specific gun is on the list.

Now this is the kind of information that I was looking for. Thanks. So, what was the problem(s) with the "E" & "F" glocks? What upgrades did they require? How can I tell if an upgrade has been done?

These two Glocktalk threads should help with the "recall/upgrade" parsing...sort of like the definition of the word "is" (some Klintonian stuff coming from Gaston and his legions)?

Bottom line, I have two used ones that aren't on the list, and I like them a lot. I actually like the finger grooves...helps the handall from riding up the grip during firing.

These are the generations of Glocks as I understand them...

1st Gen- Glock 17s only, had the pebble-grain pattern that is on the sides of the grips of current production guns all the way around the grip; no checkering, no finger grooves/rail. Had one of these and traded it off.

2nd Gen- all 17, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24 models produced until they started adding the finger grooves and light rail; checkering on the front and backstraps, and the half moon cutout at the bottom of the frontstrap.

2.5 Gen- includes Models 21 and 20 that have the finger grooves but no light rails and models 26, 27 that have finger grooves that are not checkered ( I have seen and owned these, and they came from the factory this way)

3rd Gen- Current production, may come with the built in lock-out safety soon

You're right the "F" ones are not affected by the recall.....errh..I mean upgrade.

I personally prefer the GenII non fingergroove versions. I have one II and one GenIII. Best deal going is to look for a used police trade-in, factory refurb. Lots of 22s and 17 of those out there, not sure on 23.

I noticed that my GenII 17(police trade-in)has much larger rear frame rails than my Gen III G34. Not sure why, but I never heard of GenIIs breaking rails.
