Howdy everybody so here is the situation

I am getting married in June my lovely bride has said I can get 1 gun this year so I have 2 options

Option 1) Dan Wesson Vbob 9mm duty treat yes I know they have been discontinued still want one
Roughly $1800

Option 2) Send my rem 721 in 30-06 off to Douglas to have it rebarreled to 6.5-06 then send it straight to fords for their master polish job yes I want a very pretty hunting rifle
Roughly $1500

For the pistol it is discontinued so they ain’t making any more so I’m leaning that way
The rifle will take time to get finished so what to do?

You asked what I would get and so, the 6.5-06 would be it. I'm over 1911's.

You should have asked what I think YOU should get and that would be the 1911 since you can always have the rifle work done (next year for your anniversary). Btw congrats :)

If you ever want to hunt in the rain or thick brush, you may regret the decision to have a "very pretty" hunting rifle.

On the other hand, if you get a very pretty hunting rifle, you can plead that you need a more Plain Jane practical rifle for more challenging hunting. In that way you would get TWO rifles!

It's what's called the "dump truck principle." If you want a pick-up, you ask for a dump truck. When the plan to get a dump truck is rejected, you compromise and ask for a pick-up.

There is also a very old and maybe forgotten principle. Women don't count past three. Once you get three guns, any additional guns will be called "those guns" and you can get all you want.

This is all tested and tried by personal experience. ;)

^my thoughts exactly...with a touch of snake in the grass.

My pretty rifles have never made it to the deer stand. They won't look so pretty after I bang around the woods. For that reason, I default to the 1911.

Edited for 'cause of grammer.

Get the Dan Wesson V-Bob...the rifle rebarreling and refinishing can wait!

And congrats on the upcoming wedding! Sounds like you've got yourself one gun friendly bride to be!

I don't have a use for a pretty gun, mine are all tools to be used and enjoyed, no need to worry about a scratch, it will happen

More importantly...does she know how many you're starting with? if the answer is yes...you're at a major disadvantage for the rest of your marriage:D
But seriously, go for the 1911. You can always have the rifle sent out to be redone. Trying to find that one perfect gun that got away...after it's been discontinued, that can be a challenge

"One gun this year". My guns cost between $300 and $700 (.22 handguns, CZ, Sigs, AKs). At these prices, assuming I have a steady job and cover the bills, a fiance would Have to be kidding.

As MackIVshooter suggested: "one pair of shoes" or even "one purse". No kidding here-not one bit. >>We discover the Rest of the spouse's feelings only After the wedding<<.

I would get the one you don’t already own and “fix” the one that you already own. Just be sure to not say anything negative when she brings home more shoes or purses...

Guys let’s get back to the point not talking about my lovely bride nor mentioning the house we are building the honeymoon or the fact that we are trying to have kids soon as in 2020

So about the guns

It's OT, so this will be the last thing I say about it, but spouses trying to control each other inevitably leads to failed marriages. Between the resentment and sneaking around to do what you want without their knowledge, no good can come of it. My wife and I have very open communication, and as long as one's actions don't negatively affect the other, we don't care. She can go wherever she wants, do whatever she wants, buy whatever she wants, and as long as her activities & expenditures aren't detrimental to us, I'll never ask her to change that, and it's reciprocal.

So to say one last time I am “In charge of my Finances” We are open about the money we spend but for a couple of “Kids” just getting started we have to be smart about our spending so yes “We” agreed to me getting a new gun or fixing an old one

One pair of shoes? Wth. Unless they are buying 1500-1800 dollar shoes to put in a safe that's a crappy argument that one will lose rather quickly.
And I highly doubt anyone says ok, you get 1800 a year for shoes. I get 1800 for shoes and a gun. Fair? I wonder about the marital status of many who give marital advice.

Anyway. I'd buy whichever I wanted most. Of your dead set on those particular rifle builders to work on your rifle then I'd go that way. Never know when people quit building or pass away.

As far as the pistol..... they are already discontinued and thinking a 1911 is going to go up in value anytime soon is pretty laughable. So I'd get it next year if I wanted it.

Don't let the cute replies discourage you. All those other things are much more important than either gun. My advice is to forget about the guns. As long as you have a carry gun and home defense gun, which can be the same gun, you can meet your responsibilities. Your family doesn't need the 6.5-06 or the 1911 unless you have nothing else. Just stay focused on what's important.

My vote is none of the above.

I would buy a matching pair of His & Hers firearms. You don't mention how she feels about guns but getting her a firearm that she can use for self-defense is very practical thinking for a guy and emotional thinking for a lady.

Lay the groundwork for getting future guns by putting her safety your main concern.

First advise is to setup an account your soon to be wife doesn't know about. Fund it slowly over time. Buy either one now, get the other one next year :) You know she has her own account for stuff she wants.

Congratulations, bro!

I would say 1911 because they are only going to get harder to find if you wait and you can always send out the rifle later.

As an aside, I cringe to think of customizing a 721, if it is in good condition already. They are a bit rare and were meant to be solid, no frills rifles which some (including me) consider perfect the way they are and generally superior to a new 700. Personally, I would start with a "sporterized" M1917, Mauser, or '03A3 Springfield which has already lost any collector value, are cheap and common, and can be easily turned into wonderful custom rifles.

But its your gun and $$, do what makes you happiest, life is short! Good luck!

I wouldn't do either one. But if pressed between the two I'd get the pistol because they don't make them anymore and I think you'd be downgrading the rifle caliber by going to 6.5-06.
