I am looking for an EDC since I just broke the locking mechinasm on my old one. I am looking at the following knives

http://www.blackhawk.com/product1.asp?P=70-&C=C0978

http://www.blackhawk.com/product1.asp?P=55-&C=C0985

Which of these knives are best for the money ?

I am welcome to any suggestions for knives that will be similiar to the BlackHawk knives. I really do not want to pay that much idealy I would not want to pay more then $150.

I am needing a general everyday work knife ( cutting sticks, rope, opening packages, etc ) I need it to be partially serated with a pocket clip I do not like Tanto points though. I want it to have a blade length of 3.5 to 4.25 inches and have good quality steel and be something I can use as a field expediant hammer if needed

Here are some of the knives I have carried and what I liked about them and what I did not like

I have carried a Ka-Bar Mule an like the size but I want something a little lighter and with better steel.
I have carried a SOG Flash II and did not really like it I did not like the way the handle felt or the locking mechinasm.
I have carried a S&W SWAT I do not remeber which one it was but I picked it up for about $60 and the blade was partially serated and it was an assited open blade and the handle felt like it was covered with skateboard tape. I did not much care for it though it was a little too small and the locking mechiniasm broke when I was using it

If anyone has any suggestions for knives that combine what I need with what I like please let me know

I don't know squat about Blackhawk knives, but I do know that Blackhawk is generally pretty proud of their prices. I think the question that you should be asking is if the Blackhawk knives have a good quality to value ratio. I mean, it shouldn't just boil down to price, but there also isn't any reason to pay gobs of money for something that isn't worth it.

If that all works out, I would think it's more of a personal thing. Which one do you like better? Which one is more suitable to you? I don't know that anyone is going to be able to say for certain that Blackhawk knife A is substantially better than Blackhawk Knives B, D and C, you know? You know your needs better than we do.

My current EDC is

a Smith & Wesson HRT Magnesium with serrated edge SWHRTMGS which lists for about 50 and can be had at Big5 on sale or on the net for 13. Fairly heavy/stout. solid lockup, little to no sideways play and its adjustable.

Well, from what you say you want, I can tell you that I just spent $90.00 on a Benchmade Griptilian and am blown away. I know it's a knife that has been around for awhile, but the one I bought is the first one I ever handled, and I really, really, really like it. It flicks open easy as pie and the axis lock is superb. You can get them plain and partially serrated, and I really like the modified sheepsfoot blade. I keep bringing up how much I like that knife, and I feel like a little bit of a fanboy, but I really do think it is a great knife, and I am kicking myself for not buying one sooner.

But, that being said, I also like Spyderco and don't believe you would be unhappy with any of their products, most (but not all) of which are in your price range, with some (like the Native) being very reasonably priced (30-40 bucks or so) and very well constructed. Delicas can be had for not substantially more, as can Enduras.

Some ideas.

I would've agreed with TimboKhan about the Griptillian, I really love mine. But your comment about not liking slots eliminates that one. I do have a Cold Steel Voyager and it has the thumbstuds, but it has a tanto point, so that one is out. So I guess of all my knives I only have two that meet your requirements. One is a Leatherman lock back knife and it is a really nice knife, I paid too much, but I was eager and didn't shop around. It has a lots of extras, a carabiner, a can opener, and leathermans interchangeable bit holder. It does have 154CM steel so it is good steel... but it is really too heavy for pocket carry, it has a pocket clip... but it sucks and its still too heavy.

That only leaves me with one knife I can recommend and I just got it yesterday, its a CRKT Laredo designed by Ron Lake. It is a really nice knife, very affordable especially compared to the typical quality knives like Spyderco, Benchmade and Cold Steel and all the others. It has a thumb stud and it is available with a partially serrated blade. It has the 8Cr14MoV blade and is very well made. It has a pocket clip and sits very nicely in the hand, I really like it. The only down side, sort of, is its made in China... not quite as high quality as the Benchmade's or the Spyderco's Seki City made knives. Although to tell the truth, there is nothing wrong with it its feels very high quality, no machine marks, the mechanism is very tight, no slack. So even though its made in China, it seems very high quality it's actually better made then the last Buck Knife I bought. So perhaps it being made in china isn't quite the mark against it, I thought it was.

It is very sharp and the pocket clip can be switched to either side, so it's lefty friendly, unlike the CS voyager I have. One nice thing about the Laredo is it has a "safety" CRKT calls it the L.B.S. (Lock Back Safety) and it works very easily. Just slide it forward to lock the blade closed or after opening it you can lock it open. Don't have to use if you don't want it, so it's unobtrusive. BTW I just looked at CRKT's website and they now call it the Bandera, but its the exact same knife I have.

Just my humble opinion and my .02... hope it helps.

(not so little, but it's what everyone calls me. :p )

Um... the Top O' The Line Benchmade Ruckus (mini) can be had for less than $150, and I have never heard someone say it was a bad knife. Fits everything you want. And the 2 sizes are right under, and right over 4".

But I wouldn't use a $150 knife as a hammer.... That's what $10 knives are for.... Or rocks, screwdrivers, or... hammers.

field expediant hammer

You'll have to get a fixed blade if this is important since no folder will tolerate being used for a hammer and certainly none with a composite or Al-alloy body.

I really dont need it to be a field expediant hammer but it would be nice to know that it I did need it to it would be able to handle it. The only thing I have ever used a knife as a hammer for is to adjust the front post sight on my M44 Mosin Nagant

Looks like Blackhawk now owns the Masters of Defense knife company. Those are the models that you linked to.

Here's a place with the MOD knives as well as other higher quality lockblades and automatics:

Personally I don't think you can go wrong with anything from Emerson Knives. Shop around and you can find them in your price range.
