I would opt for the Ruger SR40, as I prefer the ergonomics of the gun over the S&W M&P and the SA XD. When I was looking for a compact 9mm. last year, I tried all 3 models offered by these manufacturers. For me, the Ruger SR9c had the best overall feel to it, along with some great sights, a decent trigger, and some innovative design features that I really liked.

I owned an FN FNP-40 for about a year. It was reliable and there was nothing wrong with it. I just didn't like it. DA trigger pull is heavy and clumsy (and I own a bunch of DA/SA guns), I didn't like the trigger being made of plastic, bore axis was high resulting in a lot of muzzle flip, and worst of all the decocker is in the same position as a 1911 thumb safety and will prevent the gun from firing if it's held down - anyone with 1911 muscle memory probably doesn't want an FNP handgun. My 2 cents.

I agree about the decocker on the FNP series. I ended up cutting the left side lever off on my FNP-9 for that very reason. The safety/decocker on the FNX series resembles the safety/decocker on the FNP USG series. I have a FNX-40 and ride the thumb safety just like a 1911 and have not had it inadvertently decock the gun yet. The FNX also has a lower bore axis so the muzzle flip is pretty tame for a .40 S&W. The trigger has also be improved as well. All in all I think the FNX is a better gun than the FNP. YMMV.
