I own Glocks, Colt 1911's, etc. Im ready to look into another 9 mm for range work and IDPA with an occasional carry gun.

For you Sig enthusiasts which sig in 9 mm (do to ammo availability mainly) should a new Sig owner look into? I've never shot any Sig model.

Thanks

If you want an all around Sig for IDPA, CCW, and range work, a P229 would be a good choice.
Do yourself a favor, shoot one before you buy one. A Sig is much different from a 1911 or a Glock. You'll probably have to change your hand position on the gun. Many 1911 shooters new to Sigs tend to ride the slide release lever with their thumb causing the slide not to lock back after the last shot - not a big deal, just a matter of changing your hold. Alot of Glock people don't like the higher axis that the Sigs have compared to Glocks. Personally, I don't shoot Glocks well and I think its because I'm so used to shooting Sigs.
Good luck - Sigs are great quality guns.

I'd suggest you look at one of the older P225s, P228s, or P226s (9mm) with the stamped/fabricated slide. These should be available used or "CPO" (SIG's factory refurbished used pistols) to save you a buck or two. An older SIG with a well broken in trigger is about as nice as DA/SA gets. Many people (including me) prefer the balance and feel of the older stamped metal slide SIGs vs. the newer machined stainless steel slide models.

P225: compact, roughly commander sized, single stack
P228: P225 with double stack mag
P226: duty size with double stack mag

Pick the one that fits your hand best.

1Blindref is correct

Yep, P229 9mm is a GREAT GUN, trustworthy, accurate, CCW, and has a nice optional Crimson Trace (CT) laser-grips option.

For a Sig in 9mm you really just can't go wrong with the 226.

+1 to the suggestion that you rent and shoot one. Sigs have sort of a unique feel in the hand, you either love it or loathe it.

Since you say concealed carry - P229 or P228 - I would suggest the P228 (get the 229 if you want a rail).

The P226 is a great range gun - but it is really big to carry.

My best advice would be to buy a Used P228 and send it in to Gray Guns for an action/trigger job.

I'd get the P229 model

Since you mentioned range use and sometimes carry, I'd get the P229 model of Sig, which is small enough to carry, but strong enough to be a great range gun. I have this model in .40 caliber (and also a P226 in 9mm), and feel that the P229 is just about the perfect all-around gun. The P226 is a little too big for easy CCW, I think.

For your requirements, I'd recommend the 229 in 9mm, either standard or eliite model, depending on your budget. If you'd like a quote on any, drop me a PM--I'm a Sig dealer. ;)

Thanks

Thanks everyone for the advise and time spent! Great site too!

I'm thinking 226 or 229 now. Probably 226 as I find I shoot my longer guns more it seems.

Thanks again!

Wow, nobody mentioned the P239! I bought one two years ago and carry it all the time. the accuracy is incredible. The last time my friend and I were at the range, he shot several handguns, but the only one that was 100% reliable was my P239. It’s the perfect carry Sig in my opinion.

I missed the part about carry, but I'd still say P229 first simply based on capacity.

That having been said, I own a P239 and I agree it's wonderful. One of my favorites.

I think I was just thinking more of an all purpose gun.

Here's another vote for the P239. I've been using it in IDPA for the past two years and have to say that no accuracy is lost because of the short barrel.

The new P229 SCT! Such a nice piece.. not to mention 17+1rds of 9mm for home and range duty and optional standard 13rd mags for carry. TFO front, rear Sig night sights make for a good sight combo IMO. The front cocking serrations without the beavertail (like the P229 Elite) look sharp too! Definitely going to be my next purchase, but in .40.

*edit*: oops forgot to mention that they come with four (4) 17rd mags!
