Which would you choose?

You have the choice between two laws being passed. You and you alone decide which law is passed. You MUST pass one, and it MUST be one of these two. The choices are:

1.) A law in which all waiting periods and taxes on firearms are repealed, but there is an Assault Weapons Ban-like limit on which firearms are legal.

2.) A law which legalizes all firearms but adds a tax (say $25 for discussion's sake) and requires a waiting period (say 3 days for discussion's sake) on all firearms purchased.

Which would you choose and why?

I'm used to hassles...look at where I live... As it is when I send a gun off to a gunsmith, FedEx acts like I'm shopping a bomb.

Illuminate, I must admit that my first reaction to your post was one of hot-headed disgust.

I have since taken a few gulps of oxygen and have remembered that you are here on The High Road. I infer that you are merely attempting to stimulate a discussion, correct?

For the sake of the discussion, I would choose the second option because it is closer to merely a variety of tax, and nowhere near as arbitrary as the first choice. (Whatever happened to tarring and feathering the ocassional errant public servant? There are at least 600 of 'em in DC that could use the treatment right now!)

Yes, just trying to bring up a hypothetical situation to kind of see what people's preferances are. People seem to take things too literally around here at times... but that's not their fault I suppose. Our political system has made it to where we have to be that way.

Anyway, I would choose the second as well. I would rather be treated like a criminal and eventually given what I want then treated like a criminal and only given some of what I want. I don't prefer either, though.

I voted for the second option. I would rather have neither, but this isn't a perfect world, so be it.

I would however be more willing to pay a small 'tax' on something than be prevented from having it altogether. Besides, the removal of restrictions and BS lawsuits would most likely lower the retail cost of firearms, which would help offset the cost of this tax.

As for waiting periods, I'm rather ambivelant on them. While I don't support them in theory, having to wait 2-3 DAYS to pick up an NFA weapon would still be better than the MONTHS it takes now.

A tax I can handle. A prohibition is far, far worse. Waiting periods? I'm against them, but most people who don't already have guns probably won't need to run out and get a gun immediately. Maybe in a riot or something, or an abusive boyfriend or something. I'm sure it's happened. The lesson is: get your guns now.
