I have a Mauser pattern action on its way to be the base for a custom rifle. I’ve spent more than a few hours searching for makers of classically styled hunting rifles; blued steel and walnut, European/African stalking rifle lines, and have had no success other than finding the folks at Griffin and Howe and a couple others who charge more than my new Superduty just cost. Can anyone who has done this, provide some recommendations of craftsmen who stack up fairly well against these preferences?
- Experienced with Mauser pattern actions
- Their preference is to build hunting rifles
- not insulted when asked for references
- full service - He/she can shape and inlet wood as well as metal
- located in the CONUS

Thank you for any help guys,
Ed

For a hunting Rifle, You might want to look at Bell & Carlson aluminum line stocks. About $350... I recently bought one for a Remington 700 BDL. I did nothing but drop it in. The fit was tight. on the range , five shot groups @ 100 yds was under 1"... If I would of went with a walnut, I would have had to do the final inletting , glass or pillar bed (or both) then sand and put a finish on the stock.. Buying a good premium barrel, Chambering, blueprinting the action to the barrel , drill and tap for scope comes next...

I build one on a gew 98 action that I was given. New barrel, Brown Precision fiberglass stock, new bolt handle welded on, Leopold mount, rings and scope. If I stated now I would not use a military action. But a commercial 98 action would the basis of an excellent build.

Good Luck

I have had two rifles built for me. Both are flint lock muzzle loaders, one a .32 caliber and one a .36 caliber. There are some real craftsmen out there that make truly beautiful muzzle loaders.

I just finished one also:

Jeff is usually pretty busy as are all the good smiths. He worked for GA Precision for years before starting out on his own. Very good response times when you email him:

Best to figure out your budget early..my last one went a little over $3K minus the action.
