C403FAA4-255F-4AD3-AB9F-71F4B1A56391.jpeg I probably still do at distances much past 25 yards. But still, I was encouraged I did even this well being as rusty as I am with only a bead.

I am noticing a new kind of pain, though. I fired 20 rounds of slugs from a standing position yesterday. Usually that results in bruising and “surface” pain. This is a weird ache deep in the core of the shoulder joint. Getting old sucks.

Still, I’m psyched I can still hit the target after a long hiatus.

i had a verona 12ga, with normal remington slugs and the bead. i could keep all on a pie plate at 100. a good hot soak will help with that deep ache. good shooting.

That’s a goal of mine. To stay minute of deer boiler room out to 100 yards with just a bead.

Good optics are expensive, and no optic is better than a cheap optic. Hopefully there’s a work around.

never hunted with slugs, but would love to make a old sxs in to a poor mans double gun. i would feel comfortable pulling the trigger at 100. does your gun have a rib, they got the sights that clamp to the ribs, think i got a set.

I can do about the same with slugs and just a bead out to about 25 yards. Never tried it farther with just a bead. I've been able to keep everything inside of 4-5" at 100 with a slug barrel and irons. But I can't imagine I'd ever hunt with slugs. Just played around with shooting a few at the range from time to time in case I had to make do sometime.

Once upon a time long ago I got pretty good out to about 50 yards with just a bead and Foster style 12 ga. shotgun slugs ( 2 & 3/4" ) Remington Sluggers out of a High Standard Flite King. Then in 1987 got an 870 with the smoothbore slug barrel with rifle sights. That barrel was great with 2 & 3/4" Winchester Foster style slugs. Could have used 3" shells in that one but I've taken deer with both and I'm convinced that deer can't tell the difference. The 2 & 3/4"ers were a little more accurate so I stuck with those. Today that 870 is my dedicated slug gun with a fully rifled Remington barrel and a 2.5x Leupold running 2 & 3/4" Winchester / BRI sabots. What sort of plans do you have involving slugs? ..... Might be worth getting another 870 barrel.. P.S. I never fire that many slugs in one session; and now you know why. Welcome to the aging process.

I have gone all the way from a M12 16 gauge and Fosters through an 870 smoothbore and sights, an Ithaca Deerslayer and Fosters, a Hastings Paradox and Brennekes, several rifled choke tubes and sabot slugs, fully rifled Rem, and others and now am set with the ultimate, imo, a 220 Savage, Rem 3" Accutips and a 1 1/2-4 1/2 scope. I have cast different slugs, bought about everything on the market, probably have a brain like a NFL lineman from the recoil and can stat we that almost anything will work some of the time but without spending the huge bucks for a Tar Hunt or other custom slug gun, if you want 150-200 good possibles you need a good dedicated fully rifled solid frame gun like the Savage with top end sabot slugs, a good scope and trigger, and practice. BTW, I have cleanly taken deer with Fosters, Brennekes, SSTs, BRI, Lyman Sabot style as well as a 357 handgun in the slug state of IL. I have a friend that uses his original 1951 870 and Fosters and equals me every year but he won't shoot past 75 yards. My opinions based on my experiences over 61 hunting years. To answer the original question, give the game its due and equip yourself with the sighting arrangement that will let you make killing shots at the limit of your ability.

With my BPS 20 ga I can print about 4 in groups at 50 yds with just the bead. It shoots 8" high of my point of aim though.

I've got a Remington Model 1100 with a 22" barrel with just a front bead sight that will group 5 slugs (Federal) 2 3/4" right at 5" at 100 yards, but since that time; I've had congestive heart failure so I haven't even taken it out of the safe since that time. BTW I used it to qualify at Trinidad JC in Colorado for Range Master School back in 2006. Just about everybody else was using slide action shotguns and the instructor was laughing at my choice of weapon for there range, that is until he went down range to check my score.

The first dozen of more deer I killed were with an 870, foster slugs and a bead for a sight.
12 gauge slugs are abusive to shoot, you just notice it more when you are older and wiser.

I put an Aimpoint Comp M4 on my Browning Bolt action slug gun. I can also put a 3x magnifier behind it if I choose. The open sights are fine but my old(er) eyes can't deal with open sights on ANY rifle anymore. I easily get 2" groups at 100 yards with it.

I would not recommend that you shoot slugs through a side by side. I've seen many ruined by trying it. The slight barrel taper to the center point of aim is enough to restrict the flow of the slug in many cases. Not worth trying to see if it works, in my opinion.

I do need a scope on my slug guns....but then the paper plate can be a 7" snack plate at 100 yards.

I don’t have a perceived need for slugs but if I did it would be a Browning Silver Cantilever Buck in 20 gauge. It would have a scope mounted on it.
