Who's a fan of single shot pistols in rifle calibers?

Noticed you said rifle calibers... Have two first generation frames with multiple barrels. Do wildcat cartridges count? 30-30 Herrett & .357 Herrett. Have taken whitetail with the .357 Herrett.
A friend of mine let me shoot his 30.06 in a T.C. Think it had a 16 inch barrel. "Can I shoot it again?" "Sure, he said" It was fun until he told me I was shootin' his hand-loaded reduced loads! Do not know what it would feel like with full loads.
But yeah!, kinda a fan! God willing, will hunt again with a Contender, but I still take 'em, to the "range" for play.

My father in law has a 30 herrett that I load for. Great little cartridge. I had a 357 herrett but sold it to buy my 357 max.

Dad had a CVA muzzleloader pistol in .50cal. 100 grains (2 pellets) of White Hot would send that trigger guard slamming into my fingers so hard I thought I broke a few the first time I fired it. Not a particularly fun experience so never became a fan. Maybe 70 grains of loose would have made a difference but I suspect there would still be unburnt powder with the short barrel.

I definitely don't think I would shoot 100 grains of powder in the pistol.
It's rated for it, but I don't imagine it would be fun to shoot.

My contender will do that if you load it up hot enough. I modified the release lever by bobbing it about 1/4 inch and reshaping it with a torch and wood mallet, but it still requires a specific grip to prevent it. On mine you have to hold your support hand one knuckle down from what you are used to and put your left thumb behind your right wrist. I have let lots of people shoot mine and all have been fine, but I had to learn that technique the hard way.

The other technique that works well is to keep the first two fingers on your support hand straight. Some grips are also better for this than others. The encores are really well designed to keep the release out of your fingers.

IMG_1801.JPG T / C Encore with 15" barrel in 7mm-08 and 2.5-8x Leupold. Originally I had wanted a Contender in .35 Remington but couldn't pass up the deal on this one. The recoil isn't all that bad. I've shot other people's single shots when chronographing them for the owners to ensure the safety of my Shooting Chrony and some were worse; some were pussycats. My usual handload has a 139 gr. Hornady S.P. running an average 2417 fps.

Love it.
I have wondered if you could interchange the barrels between stainless and blued. This pic answers that.
I kind of like the 2 toned look, plus if you find a good deal on a barrel, you're not stuck if its the wrong finish.

Used to own a Remington XP-100 in 7mmBR; was scary accurate out to 200+ yards. Was going to get in converted into a rifle for coyotes; one of those projects that never got done before I sold it.

The resale value on TC barrels is really good as well. You can get whatever you want custom made from match grade machine for around $300 and if you decide you don't like it resell it for about 200

The thing I don't like about this CVA is that barrels are not interchangeable, and even if they were, they're being discontinued. Soooo many options with the T/C, like you mention.
I have the same issue with my muzzleloader. I got the CVA Optima Elite because I viewed it as a poor man's Encore. Barrels were interchangeable. Well, I didn't get a barrel for a few years and then decided to get one. Well, the Apex replaced it and now you can't get barrels.

I can get a T/C Contender frame for about what this CVA costs. I think that would probably be the smarter route. I'm trying to have it done by next deer season, so I'd have plenty of time to get what I needed.

One thing to look at as well is you can sometime get a contender or encore complete for pretty decent deals and flip them. I have another contender I am building into a carbine. I bought a complete 7TCU pistol with a scope off of gunbroker for $400. I sold the barrel for $220, sold the grip and forend off it for $50, sold the scope that was on it for I think $60, and kept the scope mount, so even after shipping costs and whatever I have less than $200 in the frame.

I also picked up an absolute gem of a stock for it for $140 on ebay. Still haven't gotten a barrel for it, project keeps getting put off.

You can't go wrong with T/C Encore 7mm 08 in 15".
Mine is fantastic even at long range but that's off sandbags, up closer like inside 100 yards all
that varies is practice. The trigger & grip are the easiest part to master, the scope is where I have
to -focus- on the most. Several good ones made & I'm no expert on them but -now- all mine are good ones
I even have an old Tasco on a 7mm 08 with 7" BBL that came like that & it is as good as any I have
bought.
I have even bought some HIGH DOLLAR scopes that died on the first shot with a 44 mag or 7mm 08.
I saw a 243 here in my buddies gun shop about a year ago & looked for reload info on it, went back to buy
it & somebody had bought it already.

7-30 waters for me, but if I were considering a new platform I would be looking at 7-08. The .243 is so stinking light, and the short barrel would be another handicap. 7-08 with heavy for caliber bullets overcomes the light handicap.

I guess the biggest thing to consider is what you intend to do with the gun. Paper doesn’t take much to kill, deer take a decent amount of power. Deer size, range, terrain are factors. These guns suck in wind, the gun itself is like a parachute catching wind if you try to shoot it offhand. Rested is absolutely the way to go.
