Why are we always on the defensive?

Every time there is a mass shooting and/or terrorist attack, pro gun advocates are always defending the 2A. I would like to see Republicans put the Democrats on defense after events like this. Turn the playbook against them... Bring in victims and have them say that they wish there weren't gun free zones and that if guns were more readily available, that they could have had a way to defend themselves, etc. Just make arguments over how the current gun laws are too stringent and, had the laws been looser, people would have had a means to defend themselves. Put the liberals on the hot seat and force them to cede and back off. Make them be the bad guys.

Because only about 10% of our number actually want to go on the offensive. Sorry, but it is what it is. Gun owners largely value the status quo, and typically we only start demanding change once we get into the weeds of NFA items or numerou$ FFL interstate transfers. Otherwise, we're so non-confrontational by nature, that we put up with the system as it is.

Only about 5% of them (that's right, probably about TWO senators) feel as you do. They are in all likelihood outnumbered by the guys --supposedly on our side-- who get their kicks proposing one-sided 'compromises' and such out of fear they'll magically lose more by not cooperating (an assumption from a point of weakness based on the idea that the person you are dealing with has the authority to take more than you are offering, which is plainly not the case in the House or Senate)

I for one don't like that idea because we are then no better than Democrats if we use tragedy to drive an agenda. If we use people's suffering to further our demands. It just doesn't seem right to me. I agree and hate that they do it, and it does always keep us on the defensive, but I'd rather walk the moral high ground I suppose.

As more and more of these happen I think more and more people realize they are responsible for their own safety and take up arms as a result, just look at the gun sales following these events. Sure some are from within our ranks trying to beat out a scare or shortage, but many are people new to firearms. Sadly though, on the flip side you also have more people speaking up about the need for more gun control after tragedies. Personally I don't think we're very far off from another "assault weapons ban," the media simply politicizes AR's too heavily it's becoming harder and harder to justify having them even to some of my fairly open minded friends and colleagues.
