Don't worry I did not marry an anti- :) She is fully supportive of my collecting and competitive shooting. Just she is just a extreme nurturing type and does not like loud noises due to synesthesia.

We moved out to the county with a large lot without street lights. We are on a dead-end dirt road with 1.25-2.5 Acre lots. Neighbors are very watchful (we were watched very closely when viewing the home a couple times one even parked in front of the house to watch us) but we entertain a lot and they have gotten accustomed to the traffic. I worry about being too isolated.

We are thinking about Pepper and/or OC. Thinking about stashing one in the bedroom and one in the kitchen where she spends most of her time so portability is not an issue.

I have not kept up with regard to non-lethals so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Big dog - gives you a heads up and acts as a great deterrent.
He most certainly does. He is also 9 and blind in one eye. We won't be getting another until I get back from a 4 month assignment in another state ~May 2019. We will be in an apartment for those 4 months.

No pets allowed then I take it?

Pepper spray, extra lock system from the inside; if she likes to play ball, a bat can be helpful

But I am confused - you mentioned being out in the country on large lots with watchful neighbors, then say an apartment so I think I missed something....

It's Feb 2018. My employer will be sending me on a 4 month assignment in another state ~Jan 2019. Don't want to get another dog(s), particularly large dogs, until we are back in our house ~May 2019.

Tactical strobe light perhaps? Disorienting, painful ranged weapon, no recoil, no legal restrictions.

This is what my daughter uses. We tried pepper spray, and after practicing our way through 5 X$10 tubes I gotta say, I'm not a fan.
Range is very limited- 15 feet max with any accuracy. The pocket sized cans are limited to only a few seconds of spray time and all the newer spray cans have a goofy2-step safety trigger which is difficult to manipulate in a hurry. The wind or close contact back spray can result in you getting it in YOUR eyes....on top of all that, many places restrict carry of pepper spray.

An actual taser. We use to ground grapple while getting OC sprayed just for fun. A stungun is like a tickle, I don’t care how many volts it is...try it. Worst case you get some tattooing
A taser is about the only non loud non lethal besides tear gas or a vomiting agent that would make a believer out of someone and actually stop a person. Plus if you use a taser and get a police report stating it’s proper use, taser use to send you a free replacement cartridge. Downside is tasers aren’t fail proof, clothing, moving arms pulls the leads out, flat out missing, etc
If none of those, then I would suggest getting a very expensive security system, cameras, security doors and windows, locks that have security pins (makes it harder to pick) and a panick room, with comms that call out even with no power. The problem with all that is if it can go wrong it will go wrong...and if I saw someone duck into a panic room, I’d just take whatever it is that I wanted or whatever while setting the house on fire...

Sabre Red OC spray.

Kimber PepperBlaster (are these still being made? The Guardian Angel volunteers around here used to open-carry them.)

TASER-type dart-firing electric weapon.

Long-handled impact/stun weapon (club with electrodes on the end.)

Blank-firing pistol (yes, these are loud, but she would not have to practice, limiting exposure until "the moment of truth.")

Get one of those full auto bb guns.

Or an electronic squirt gun; keep the reservoir filled with a 50/50 water and household ammonia. Less blow back than pepper spray in a confined area

I keep my mrs and my daughter in law in fresh pepper spray every christmas.

Also the strobe flashlights are pretty unbearable to look at. I buy the kind with the sharp bezel. I usually have one when i cant carry a firearm.

The best thing, imho, is martial arts training.

I have accidentally set off pepper spray in the house it I would not recommend it for in-house defense. It could end up disabling her, too, in the confined space. I agree with Klint the best approach is a hardened house, professional security system including multiple outside and inside security cams, panic alarm and safe room (could be bedroom with beefed up walls and door. And never open the door to anyone she does not know or can't see. If at all possible putting up a driveway gate and strong fence around the yard is huge benefit. It seems insane to me sometimes that we let complete strangers approach our house all the way to knocking on the front door. They should be stopped at your property line/sidewalk. Then if they climb over the gate/fence it is very clear they are a threat and you have more time to prepare and react.

But guns are really the most dependable means of self defense. You should work on her to understand her concerns and if they can be addressed would she be willing to at least try some options out. Even a .22LR pistol is miles better than any contact weapon when facing much stronger and/or multiple opponents.

BTDT. My best friend asked to see my pepper spray, and sprayed it at me-it was summer, and he had an oscillating fan going in the room. It wafted it all back into his face! We all (5 people) had to step out of the house for about 15 minutes while it dispersed, spent the whole time laughing. He spent it washing his face off with the hose.

I'd say the proper mindset is the best non-firearm weapon one can have. The mind is the weapon, everything else is tools.

Another vote for the Kimber Pepper Blaster - it's still sold in the US. It holds only two shots, but they are of highly concentrated liquid OC and are driven by two pyro-charges, making the effective range up to about 10 feet. The disadvantage is that one has to aim it precisely to the attacker's face. And you have to bear in mind that OC, unlike CS, has longer reaction time - usually about 2-4 seconds are needed for full effect. BTW, I have equipped both my brother and his wife with Pepper Blasters as an alternative for home defense, because those two ... still don't see the need to own a firearm...:cuss:And last, but not least, it's Swiss made... ;)

Can you get an integrally-suppressed single shot 12 gauge?
If so I would suggest that as a first line (loaded with a baton round) and the pepper spray as back-up.

Using a spray in doors..........Not a good idea. Can work both ways. Meaning, it can affect the sprayer as well.
Finding a defensive weapon that works for your wife with your/her limitations.... hang in there.

The first step to is to be aware of your surroundings. Perimeter alarms and cameras work pretty good. I have them and have yet to be surprised by someone on my property.
