Illinois whitetail archery.
Walked in last night and around a corner to my deer stand and CRAP! 4 deer and 6 wild turkey looking at me. Totally busted. Everybody but me ran to the next county.
Climbed my tree and settled in. Cold wind and snow flurries. Watched 5 does and fawns feed across corn stalks out of bow range. Decided to trade my stocking cap for my full face cover and hung my bow up. A buck comes running from behind me and stops 15 yards in front of me and lasers me right there looking at him looking at me with a hat in each hand and a bow hanging behind me. Crap again.
Hooded up and bow in hand I stand up for awhile. More does and fawns at my 2 o’clock. 4 more coming in at my 10 o’clock. A big buck shows up 100 yards out and is circling downwind of the does. He sees nothing but the does.
My deer stand seat that I folded up out of my way decided to fall with an unexpected bang. Does scoot. Buck stays. Crap x3
Getting dark and the big buck is still hanging out in the middle of the cornstalks. Getting really dark and with less than 10 minutes of legal shoot time left 2 fat yearlings come out or my 9 o’clock. A fat button buck steps into the open.
Take the yearling or pass?
I shot. Hit it hard. He got knocked down and flipped over like a dog and took off behind me into hell’s 5 acres. I thought I heard him crash.
I waited a bit and climbed down. Deer everywhere. I stopped counting at 20. Does and fawns with 2 big buck and one smaller one.
My arrow was stuck in the ground and covered with blood but had no blood trail not a drop for 30 yards or more. Walked every trail in that direction with no blood.
Decided to wait the night and go back this am. Overnight temps 20 degrees.
Found blood and tracked and recovered before the coyotes found it. I hit it a little high and he just didn’t bleed for awhile even though I lunged him out.
I’m glad I didn’t shoot a big one because the 100 yards uphill drag is getting to be about enough.
2nd archery deer of the year

I’ve lost count but I’m about to turn 65 and been hunting Illinois whitetail for 40 years. No longer interested in hunting the firearm season. Just too many people out at the same time and the deer get spooky. If I can’t get a couple with my old bow then I just don’t need them. I might have killed close to 100 deer?
I really need to find a young hunter to mentor, one with a strong back and a cell phone.

I have my own property that my two boys, two nephews and I hunt. Nice old garage converted into a cabin and about a dozen stands (two enclosed towers, too) scattered around. Timber, creek and a five acre tillable patch.
Stand stories, we got ‘em.
Sadly, I’ll miss going this first weekend gun season. Wife recently had her ankle replaced and has to have help. She can’t drive, yet, either.
Maybe by mid Dec.
Looking to try out a rifle in Jan for straight wall option.
