Will this affect accuracy?

I removed the flash hider from my AR-10 barrel to reduce overall length of the rifle and replaced it with a thread protector. But, the thread protector is about 1/8" too long.

I've heard that the crown of a rifle barrel can affect accuracy and was wondering if this much of an overhang will have an effect on accuracy, and why. I'm sure it has to do with the physics of escaping gasses, but not sure how much such an overhang would make a measurable impact.

Crowns' effects on accuracy are - for the greater part - a result of an inconsistent radius in whatever form the crown takes.

In your case, how the muzzle was finish-treated at the terminus of the bore is more significant than the thread protector's length. How your thread protector presents, in your case, is nothing more than a barrel-extension. What you've ended up with is often done on purpose though more heavy duty and when it is a single unit with the barrel it is called a recessed-crown.

I don’t think I did a good job of saying what I meant to say. If anything, the muzzle device you had on before may have affected the Accuracy or the point of impact. Removing the muzzle device may have shifted the point of impact back to where it was before the muzzle device.

The crown is the last part of the bore that the bullet can touch.
The thread protector is not touching the crown.
The harmonics could have been changed compared to a bare muzzle, but I doubt it.

Like @Meeks36 said, there is only one way to know...:)

No accuracy issue. As noted, you may see a slightly higher POI as you've reduced the weight hanging on the end of your barre.

This.

I'd bet the removal of the muzzle device ( weight ) would affect the barrels harmonics more then the thread protector disrupting the crown gas dispersion.

It affects harmonics somewhat, but not in the direction that really matters for accuracy - the "breathing" harmonic.

BTDT. No effect between a flush cut or over length thread protector. I’m too cheap to buy different length thread protectors, and have fired many rounds in the above pictured configuration, as well as the same rifles bare muzzle/no collar. No influence at all.

Only influence you’ll see is the harmonic shift because of the WEIGHT change from the break to the thread collar. The slightly overhanging lip on that thread collar will have absolutely no influence, it’s not a crown.

The answer to your question is, No.

The crown of the barrel is that part of the muzzle right around the exit hole -- irregularities there can result in the bullet tipping as it leaves the muzzle. The thread protector cannot effect the bullet as it exits the muzzle.
