So I just installed a Williams WGRS on my H&R Classic Carbine. Unfortunately, I am going to need a taller front sight. Even with the rear sight at its lowest elevation, I'm hitting about 5 inches high at 20 yards with my target loads.

The front sight on it is that's already in it is .570 tall. Based on some reading I found over in the Greybeard Outdoors archives, it was suggested that adding a Williams .250 front sight riser block will probably fix me up easily.

The trouble I am having now is that my .570 tall front sight seems to be about .530-.540 wide. And unfortunately, the .250 tall risers that Midway sells are only .250 wide.

Question: Could I just order another .250 wide sight riser and double up, or would that be ill-advised?

It looks like Williams also makes a .340 wide riser that Midway doesn't appear to be carrying, so I could probably track that down, and order a .340 wide sight to match it. I guess I'm just wanting to save a couple bucks and re-use the existing sight if possible.

Question would be how wide is the dovetail on the barrel.
The riser blocks lock the sight in with a set screw and I believe they also lock to the barrel with a set screw.
Another possible solution is to find a tall narrow site but most of those only go to .490

The riser blocks aren't expensive so maybe you want to get two just to see how it works. As long as you don't install them they'll take them back if it doesn't work out after you eyeball it.

Was thinking about things... if you think the dual-block arrangement is the way to go, but that the blocks are a bit loose in the barrel, or the sights loose in the block, one way we'd tighten things up is to stipple or dimple the sight (or sight block) to raise up metal to make things tighter. A bit of red locking compound in final assembly also helps, as well as that set screw.

DO NOT STIPPLE THE BARREL DOVETAIL

Only sayin this because... when a sight manufacturer starts putting locking screws in things... it suggests a rather casual fit.

I recently had an unfired, out of the box Kahr PM9, and its dovetailed front sight flew off while practicing and letting the slide fly forward with no magazine in the pistol. The sight got its bottom stippled, the slide dovetail and sight got cleaned really well, some red locking compound... now fairly tightly tapped into place, and to this day, its on there, not effected by firing, cleaning etc.

Thanks for the replies. It is a fairly wide dovetail, I would say. Here are a couple pictures. Please let me know if you have any other thoughts after seeing it.

Go for it!

Checking the math.... About .165" taller front should knock you down five inches.
