I have a Winchester 1895 in 30-40 Krag that shoots about 3 feet high at 100 yards. In comparing the front sight to illustrations in Madis' big book I have come to the conclusion that the front sight has been significantly shortened or has been changed.

It actually looks like 2 halves of 2 different sights have been cobbled together to make one sight.

My inquiry is two fold...is it in a dovetail? Is it friction fit or soldered? I can't tell by looking. How did Winchester do it?

It almost certainly is dove-tailed on.
Winchester offered way too many front sight options back then to build it as part of the barrel itself.

And it almost certainly is not soldered on, unless Bubba did it while ruining the sight some time after it left the factory.

Got a picture? Never studied an original up close but the repros are pinned to a base that is indeed soldered to the barrel.
