This is long but worth reading if you have recently bought a Winchester or FN bolt gun or are planning to.

So I recently purchased an FN SPR .308 Win. The distributor I bought it through e-mailed me last week and said that Winchester was recalling some bolt actions for some sort of "performance upgrade". He said the letter made no mention of what exactly the work would involve, but it said Winchester would pay shipping both ways and gave a direct line to call for a lady at Winchester who is handling the upgrade.

It's real nice of Winchester to offer a free "performance upgrade" and all, but we all know that no manufacturer offers a free "upgrade" unless it involves safety or reliability. And I want to know exactly what they want to do to my $1200 rifle before I box it up and chunk it in the mail.

I called the number the distributor gave me, and the lady would not tell me what the "upgrade" involved. All she would tell me is that some rifles of the same model would be affected and others wouldn't. So that tells me that some rifles have a flaw and others don't. If they could tell me what they were looking for, maybe I could check out my own rifle and decide for myself if I wanted the "upgrade" and save them alot of money.

But anyways, the lady refused to get specific, and I inisisted on talking to a gunsmith or SOMEONE that was prepared to tell me what the hell is going on. So she forwarded me to some guy's voicemail. I left a message for him on Thursday, and still no call back. I called the lady back yesterday and left a message, and she hasn't returned my call either.

My dealer called his distributor, and they said that they did have some Winchester bolt guns recalled recently. They believed that the rifles were probably missing a part but they wouldn't speculate as to which part. If that's the case, I know it's embarrassing for Winchester, but I think I deserve to know what could be wrong with my rifle.

Here is the lady's contact info. Maybe someone here will have more luck than I did.
