Winchester model 70

Put a model 70 on layaway at my LGS. Wanted some info on this rifle. Its chambered in .243 win. So itll be a good deer and pronghorn rifle. Ive heard its been called the "Riflemans' Rifle"so how does it compare to say a remington 700 ?

I own two Win Mod70s EWs...one in 7mm Rem Mag and one in .30-06 Sprg. They are as fine rifles as any I've owned...and I love my Rem Mod 700s as well. My preferred caliber for deer and Pronghorn would be .25-06 Rem but .243s have killed an awful lot of deer.

Telling you how it compares to a Rem. M700 will be exhausting to read once the other posters start telling you which is better and why. Truth is they "Both" are really two of the best out on the market price wise. Are there more accurate guns... yes, are their better quality guns aka "Craftsmanship"... yes. Will you be disappointed in your purchase.... I doubt it.

Im really glad it has iron sights and the remingtons i saw didnt . That made me choose it although the stock could be restained to a better color.

I like M70's over M700's.

Both are good.

I am certain you will be happy with your rifle and that is all that counts.

I love mine both. I do however prefer the huge claw extractor on the 70. I've ripped out the extractor on one of my 700's when a case got stuck.
The 243 is an amazing cartridge! Especially out west! Prairie dogs to mule deer your set!

Yeah the .243 will handle anything i need it for and if the animal still wont go down ill bring out the .44 mag

This is a photo of a 1980's era pushfeed Featherweight.



If yours has iron sights it is not a Featherweight, or someone added them aftermarket. Is the action pushfeed (PF) or controlled round feed (CRF)? Does it have a floorplate or is it blind magazine. From your description of the rifle it sounds like one of the PF Ranger series.

In either case you most likely will have a good rifle. The CRF versions are prefered, and worth more, but the PF rifles are VERY good rifles that often sell at bargain prices while guys pay a premium for the CRF versions.

The pre-64's with controlled round feeding earned the reputation as the "Riflemans rifle". In 1964 Winchester's actions were changed over to a pushfeed very similar to the Remington design because it is less expensive to manufacture. The pushfeeds were made 1964-2006. In 1994 Wincester brought back CRF and offered both types from 1994-2006. The new production Winchesters are only offered with CRF actions

The claw extractor, new trigger and 3 position safety do it for me. I also think that the Winchester checkering pattern is more attractive than the Rems.

I cant honestly say what feed system it has but for sure it had iron sights. The only reason i say a featherweight is because its in .243 , i dont know much about the model 70s so thats why im asking for imput

Have owned several Model 700s and a couple Model 70s. The new Winchester 70 is a superb rifle, I have a new Featherweight in 308 and I love that gun, nicer feel then any of my Remingtons. My Winchester is a good shooter too, I can completely cover my groups with a quarter at 100yds (Speer BTSP handloads) which rivals my Savages and beats my Remington/Browning, it only looses to my SCAREY accurate Tikka. Unlike some of my other rifles it even likes factory ammo, not that I use it often but if I ever had to it shoots 150gr Core-Lokts just under an inch.

I kind of mirror Flatbush Harry. I like Remington and Winchester but lately my preference is to Winchester because their quality is better at the moment. I own 2 model 70's presently and 3 700's.

My newest rifle was a model 70 Featherweight in .243 Win purchased new just before xmas. The .243 is a fantastic caliber, I'd rather have it over a lot of other cartridges. My favorite is still the .25-06 though which is chambered in one of my 700's.

You'll probably like the model 70 I have from the first time I saw one. But I can say the same about the Remington too.

Yes, I'm a big fan of the model 70 no matter which model it is. To be honest I've owned more of the standard models then any of the others.
