In a comparison of winchester 40gr .22lr Powerpoint rounds Vs CCI .22lr hollowpoint minimags, which round performs better when fired out of a stock ruger 10/22 according to the following criteria?

1)Chambering, feeding and firing reliability?
2)Accuracy at 50 meters?
3)Effectiveness against small game?

Also if both rounds cost the same, which would you buy?

I think the powerpoint is the best 22 round there is regardless of the gun it is used in. however 22 rifles can show a definite liking to a particular round and that is why you should to try both. the only CCI ammo I use is the velocitor

Kannonfyre,

Here are the ballistics from each of the company's web sites.

Bullet Muzzle Muzzle 50 Yard 50 Yard 100 Yard 100 Yard
Weight Velocity Energy Velocity Energy Velovity Energy

Mini Mag 36 gr 1260 fps 127 ft/lb 1118 fps 100 ft/lb 1035 fps 86 ft/lb

Win
Pwrpts 40 gr 1280 fps 146 ft/lb ? ? 1001 fps 89 ft/lb

Their performance is close but the Winchesters seem to carry a little more energy, probably because the bullet is a little heavier. The CCI's may shoot an inch or so flatter at 100 yards.

The more important question is which will shoot in 'your' firearm most accurately. The only way to tell is to try them both in the same firearm, if they both shoot identically (which they probably won't) then get whichever is on sale at the time.

One of the oddities about 22 lr firearms is that each one is an individual and two seemingly identical firearms will shoot differently with the same ammunition, the only way to tell is to perform your own test then stick with the brand that works best for that firearm.:D

As to the effectiveness against small game....well....you have to hit it first.

Powerpoints

I used CCI Mini Mags for years for squirrel hunting because they gave the best accuracy in my rifles. Until I found Powerpoints.

My Ruger 77/22 gave 3/4" 50 yd groups with CCI, and now does just under 1/2" with Powerpoints.

My Winchester Model 52B regularly makes 0.2" 5 shot 50 yd groups with Powerpoints.

I went right out and bought 2 bricks, which will do for the rest of my squirrel hunting life.

See this thread for my groups:http://thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=180212&page=2&highlight=22lr+groups

Not really a ballistic test, but

We often shoot 10 meter rifle in my basement using CB longs. We use air pistol pellet traps, little more than a steel box 6"x6"X2-1/2" with the back plate angled and sprung so that it gives a little as it deflects the pellet downward. Not really optimal for CBs but will do. Yesterday I told my buddy to grab some CBs from the safe and load up. First shot from my Mod. 52 was LOUD--he'd put Mini Mags in there by mistake.

Shrapnel came back out the face of the target, all half-mm size or less, no large pieces, and the back plate was unharmed and not deformed.

Don't try this at home, kids.

It's been my experience that Powerpoint shoots well in a wider variety of firearms than any other hi velocity .22 round.
I usually keep a brick or three around.:D

Geez, I like both those cartridges.
Best way to make the choice is to buy a box or two of each and try them out.
The most accurate cartridge wins.

I was a big fan of the Powerpoints until I had a box with several duds. They were a few years old but kept in a cool, dry place.

I've since switched to CCI ammo for my .22s. I've had good results with Mini Mags and Subsonic HPs in my Ruger 10/22 and Savage Mark IIGL. I also use CCI ammo in my Savage 93GL .22 Magnum, the Maxi Mags.
