My grandmother just passed on her old shotgun to me. From other examples I've seen it doesn't look like its worth very much, but even if it was I wouldn't sell it. Just wanted a little background information, and if possible the date of manufacture.

It is a single shot, break open design. On the left side it says "HARRINGTON & RICHARDSON, INC. Gardner, Mass Made in U.S.A." The barrel is stamped "TOPPER MODEL 88 20 GA. 3" FULL" It also has some sort of symbol that looks like a lower case "p" in parenthesis. (p) The serial number is AX43xxxx.

Thank you for your help.

AX denotes 1981 manufacture

Topper model ceased in 1985, company closed doors in mid 80's but naming rights were bought by another group. Known for shooting and not collecting. Depending on condition worth 80-100 bucks.

Hope this helps a little. Now go shoot some doves. :D

The H&R name is now owned by Marlin and they're still selling Toppers. Your's can use up to 3" 20 ga ammo and has a 'Full' choke. You have a 20 ga duck gun. I doubt there's a list of manufacturing dates for them as there is no collector interest.

I've got one- it is off for refinishing. Keep it- very durable, nice 20 gauge breakopen for ramblin' through the woods.
