My response is purely hypothetical right now. If I had a kid that I felt was able to handle it, I would get him/her an AR 15 or similar "EBR". It would be kept under the same conditions you specify, of course until the kid was 18. The AR is really a good little rifle for that use, it's a better kids rifle than it is a military rifle IMHO. Light recoil, simple, as safe as any properly handled rifle can be and plenty accurate. It seems to me that the "cool factor" of the rifle would be such that it could be used as a great "carrot" for inducing desired behaviour; "If you want to shoot your AR this weekend, you'd better get this room cleaned up NOW!" "You got a D in math?! No AR for you until you get that up to a B!" "I'll pay you 200 rounds of 223 to wash both the cars"

Sure. I took the kids out a couple of weeks ago to shoot *both* the AR and the new FAL. The oldest kid's girlfriend went too and just loved the FAL. I think she's going to save up and get herself one now.

note to self...get those pictures developed!

Why not a gun's a gun. Teach them the respect for life and the rules of safe handling and nothing but good times and fun will come of it.

Teach the youth for they are the future.

Hrmph - my parents didn't think as you guys do. They made me pay for my EBR. :) I was 16, it was a MAK-90, and it lived in my bedroom. I can't remember if ammo was in there too or in my father's office (not that it really matters - the office was locked, but they showed me where the key was kept). There was "one EBR" rule in effect for a while, though, so I sold it when I bought my Daewoo a year or so later.
 
But of course. They've both had Mini-14's since before age 10 (clean your room LOL, worked great). They was poorman stand in rifles for a dad who no could afford the real EBR's...When the EBM1A showed up they caught on real quick and kept offering a trade for it. Recently the EBAR-15 showed up and guess who wants to trade again? I can't trade them, what'd they have to look forward to? Besides, they have'nt even worn out the Mini's yet. I really should set a couple EBR's aside for them if I can swing it. Money in the bank.

I predict that carbon steel will hold it's value better than gold in the future.

So Invest, for the children. :D
 
Not until they're at least eight (no, not 18) years old. I believe that it's important that kids have a few years of shooting .22s first. Let 'em be kids, I say.

I'm not too worried about it...

Because both my two stepsons have already laid claim to the Gewehr98 collection, and I ain't even dead yet, not even close. And I plan on sticking around long enough to make them sweat it. When I do pass on, I'd like to float around long enough in the hereafter to watch the fight between those two, though.

I can almost hear it, "M14's MINE! Ok, then the HBAR's mine! Well, fine, that just means I get the BM-59. Be that way, jerkweed, I'll just take the 700PSS! You putz! If you take that, then I've got dibs on the 1903A4." And so forth...

It's all good, they aren't gonna get melted down or traded in for Lakers tickets, I've done my job in educating the two young men and their mom. When that day comes, it's gonna be a closed-casket funeral, I don't want them knowing I took my 6.5-06 with me for my dirt nap until after I'm already planted. ;)

(Good thing they don't read this forum, ain't it?)

Absolutely not. First, no teens (guess they don't live that long :uhoh: ;) ) and second, why bother to buy when there's plenty to go around. :)
 
My 3-year-old daughter has already informed me that the SAR-1 is hers.:D

If it looks like the Clinton ban will be renewed in September and there is a "no future transfers" rule in the bill, I may buy a stripped AR lower for each child so that they'll have the option of owning their own EBR when they are of age. (The AR lower receiver IS the serial-numbered component, correct?)
 
Actually, I'd be more likely to buy them a compact handgun, like my Dad did for me at 8th grade graduation. Learn to shoot a handgun well - master the fundamentals of sight alignment, trigger pull, etc., - and you'll be able to shoot a rifle well, too.

My .22 revolver lived in the desk drawer in my bedroom . . . and the funny thing is, it never even occured to me to do something nefarious with it. (AFAIK, the teachers and kids I detested at my old public HS are still alive and well, even today. Though it wouldn't surprise me if a few of the latter are guests of the State by now.)
