Officers down
Trainee and training officer involved in 3:05 a.m. shooting

Tulare police arrested two Earlimart men in connection with the shooting of two police officers this morning.

Jesse Barbosa, 19, and his brother Jeffery Barbosa, 18, were taken into custody on suspicion of two counts of attempted murder on a peace officer, police said in a statement.

Tulare police Lt. Jerry Breckinridge said the shooting took place during a traffic stop in the 2100 block of South Laspina Street at 3:05 a.m.

Breckinridge said one of the officers approached the stopped vehicle's passenger door and was shot. The second officer, approaching the vehicle on the driver's door, was then also shot.

One of the suspects was hit with return fire, police said. Police did not say which suspect had been shot.

Breckinridge said the officers were taken to Tulare District Hospital, where they were treated and transferred to another area hospital. Citing safety concerns for the officers, Breckinridge didn't say which hospital the officers were transferred to. The officers were reported in serious condition this morning, Breckinridge said.

Breckinridge said one of the officers is a trainee, recently hired from another agency, and the training officer is a woman. Their names were not released this morning.

After the shooting, officers put out a distress call, requesting back up. The suspects fled on foot from the shooting's scene.

Breckinridge said responding officers set up a perimeter that extended west to Blackstone Street and south to Paige Avenue. Highway 99 was also closed to traffic for a few hours.

One of the responding officers saw a person running on the highway and maintained surveillance, Breckinridge said.

About three hours later, the suspects were taken into custody. Police said both suspects were hiding among the oleanders on the highway's median. The suspect, who was shot by the trainee, was also injured by a police dog during his arrest. He was taken to the hospital where he was treated and released into custody, police said.

Police said a shotgun was recovered in the oleanders.

Because of the safety perimeter and the highway's closure, traffic through Tulare was delayed. The California Highway Patrol also reported a traffic collision on Highway 99 near Bardsley Avenue, were a semi-truck ran off the road.

Ya know, all these NICE RESTRICTIVE gun laws are REALLY making me feel safe, how about the rest of my fellow Kalifornian Komrades?

(Sure helped those cops, didn't they?)

:cuss: :banghead: :fire:

Hard to say what really happened. The two suspects were arrested within three hours of the shooting. I expect it will turn out the two brothers have gang affiliations.

Any officer who thinks the state's restrictive gun laws will protect him from harm is a fool.

I worked 17 &1/2 years in neighboring Kings County. Nasty things can happen to the officer who isn't paying attention. Years ago one of our deputies had his hair parted by a sawed off Mexican Mauser (.22 rimfire) round while making a traffic stop.

Please explain the title to this post, and how more gun laws or less gun laws, could have prevented this from happening ? two scum bag thugs shot two officers.

Well, yea...

Everyone knows that new, more strict gun laws will make it safer for everyone, right?

(in all seriousness, if the laws were less restrictive, I doubt it would have helped these two officers, but this is just the sort of incident that makes the anti gun kooks scream "OH NO! BAN MORE GUNS!" ... as if that'll have any effect other than to screw Joe Public

I know what your saying...BUT...of all people, us, and this forum....lets keep our focus on the true question....and that is, dealing with these scum bag thugs....running around shooting people... why go to the other sides mentality? lets address the true problems!! that is how changes are made.
