I didn't vote for Obama, and was disappointed he was elected. However, I had optimism that he would stay true to his word about a new direction, hope and positive change, transparency and fairness of government, reaching a hand out to be bipartisan....

Well all that has come crashing down.

The executive order to close Gitmo Bay with NO plan...

He's tried to appoint 5 tax cheats to powerful cabinet positions - 1 of which was affirmed...

He's gone against himself and appointed lobbyists...

And Congress isn't doing their job either:
The new 'stimulus' bill was bullied through Congress, both House and Senate, with zero support by Republicans and only a few votes by Republicans in the Senate. Republicans have complained that they were blocked out of most of the design or discussion of the package. Heck the thing wasn't even read before being voted on! It's 1100 pages and they voted on it 12 hours after it was published!

Where is the honesty? Where is the transparency and fairness and bipartisanship?

How is this gun related?

He "said" he supports the 2A during his presidential race. However his voting record before then was 100% anti-gun. Before his race for the white house, he was for strong gun laws. And he said he was in favor of common sense gun laws like DC! And he will appoint justices like the four that voted AGAINST Heller!

FOLKS, LISTEN UP! OUR GUNS ARE ON THE CHOPPING BLOCK! WE ARE IN SERIOUS TROUBLE! IF THE CONGRESS CAN GET THIS ABOMINATION OF A BILL THROUGH WITH ALMOST NO SUPPORT BY THE RIGHT AND 9 OUR OF 10 CITIZENS AND MOST OF THE ANALYISTS AGAINST IT, WHAT DO YOU THINK IS GOING TO HAPPEN TO OUR GUN RIGHTS?????

GET INVOLVED, WRITE LETTERS, TAKE PEOPLE SHOOTING AND INTRODUCE NEW PEOPLE TO GUNS, BUY GUNS AND AMMO TO SUPPORT THE INDUSTRY, JOIN THE NRA OR OTHER ORGANIZATIONS, ETC.

Yes, by all means please do write. And please include a sentence or 2 letting them know that you are looking forward to meeting with them live and in person at the second amendment march (whether you are planning to attend or not.)

I'll do it. I woke up two years ago. Since then, I write the letters and make the calls. I've also started letter writing campaigns locally, taken others shooting and still buy guns and ammo.

I also try to convince others here to make the calls and write the letters, coming up with even things so easy as blogging a left news website. I've even gone as far as threatening to write asking for gun control if no-one else takes action. There's limited interest in that kind of stuff here.

Some think that they can join the NRA and/or buy some guns, then that's good enough. Others bury their heads in the sand. Still others spout defeatist attitudes spewing doomsday scenarios. We need a place with more like minded people who actually want to get off their asses and do something about this situation...

what are y'all opinions about using the online forms that most senators/congressmen have on their website... do those actually get read or is a mailed letter more effective.

Mailed letters are more apt to be read, by a staffer, at least.

Emails get read by a staffer and the opinions are entered into a summary for the politician.

Form entries are sucked into a database and a summary is given to the politician.

That is what I have seen and heard.

Written letters are given more weight because they take the writer more time and effort to produce.

The forms are given the least weight.

My opinions, so probably worth what you just paid to see them.

From talking to my reps over the years another thing that's come up is this kind of generic "Don't vote for any gun laws" or "Support truck drivers", whatever it may be.

If there isn't specific legislation attached to it these don't get much attention because they are hard to quantify.

If you reference a specific bill they generally keep count of letters, but without a specific reference it's hard to tell what you are asking.

"Please vote no on HB xxx". "Please support SB yyy". Those are specific and can be counted and referenced.

That's been my experience anyway.
