I've been brainstorming on it already. Not sure yet but I need to think of something. I wonder if I can get a Cody letter on this one, and what the caliber on the letter would say ? Any ideas on a good way to mark it without hurting the value are welcome ! Under the sight sounds good but no one would ever think to look there. Pretty sure this one gets family heirloom status now anyway. Maybe not that important, but I think I'd still like to do it. Maybe a buttstock leather ammo holder with the needed info on it. That would add to the look and not have to put any markings on the rifle itself.

Ohh... I should have been more precise. I meant on the top of the sight base forward of the rear sight. You would want to remove the entire rear sight in order to stamp it.Not a lot of room but enough to mark it in small numbers.

One thing to consider is engraving the fore stock on the left side. Some nice script to match the factory marking on the barrel but with the caliber in script at least 3/4" tall

Here's a simple suggestion... Have a machinist do up a small plate with the correct caliber info then have it welded (or epoxied) right over the 30-30 markings in a contrasting finish so it stands out (or have it blued before adding to your barrel so that it doesn't stand out). Done properly with the exact curve of the barrel, polished out so that it looks professionally done and your problem is solved..

I would not permanently alter that rifle , with out consulting an appraiser or auction house first. look at collector value of mis-marked stamps coins , ect. Winchester is a valued American trademark. it might be worth more as a collector piece than a shooter. I wonder if someone can tell if it is the first or last of a run of 30-30 or 32 w.s. from serial numbers?

I agree DO NOT alter or mess with it. Write all the info on some good paper in ink and put a copy under the butt plate and in the forend. As long as you have the rifle you know what it is and can pass that info to the new owner. The notes are for someone in the future in cases your no longer around. Happens to the best of us. Besides if someone gets it and shoots 30-30 no harm and the guessing game starts all over until they find your notes. Edit: A couple other thoughts. I can't see from your pics if the receiver is D&Td for a receiver sight. There would be 2 small screw plugs right above the saddle ring. If it is you could have a small brass plate with .32 SPCL engraved ans attach it there. Not permanent, fully revers able and brass won't hurt the blueing or metal. You could also have a brass tag with the caliber marking attached to the saddle ring. These suggestions are only if you want the correct chambering shown. IF it were me I'd put the notes, leave it, and enjoy it. Oh and get some cast boolits through it.

That's a whole lot of good ideas ! I don't know why I haven't already thought of hanging something on the saddle ring myself. Seems like such a simple solution. The rear sight is easily replaceable, so that might be a good way to go too. I like the idea of no permanent marking on the rifle. I'd be curious to know if there would be any collectors value to a mismarked rifle. I'll check for the drill and tap holes. I don't think it is but that might work well too if they are there. I'm glad I asked. 10 heads are better than one.

A Texas friend (And good customer) of mine offered to educate me on cerrosafing today. he also suggested that this may be a 44-77 or a 43 Spanish. Got a little delayed in my progress by doctors today, but I'll be back on it soon. Looking forward to reporting soon as I can. So, it looks like I am gonna really enjoy this THR forum thing. So I was hoping some one could tell me how to put a picture on here ?

HHMMM, I should have been more specific ! I meant I figured out how to put a PICTURE on my profile. Still waiting on the cerrosafe for the rifle. LOL. I'll give more details next time.

Still waiting on the Cerrosafe. Promise not to throw it away. Here are some trapdoor pics for any ones discernment. Maybe you'll have an idea. If you look close you'll see there are 2 close lines circling the barrel between the rear sight and the breech. I don't recall ever seeing this on a Springfield barrel, as well showing a picture of the chamber as best I could. A 50-70 case fits in nicely but does not eject. Maybe the 43 Spanish or 44-77 are slightly wider and do eject ? Any thoughts ?

P.S. Guess I gotta eventually get this barrel right for Hollywood. It's clearly been cut before, but it's longer than carbine length. Any one know off hand what the original Trapdoor Carbine barrel length was ?

Cerrosafe made it to the mailbox today. Should have some info by this weekend if the Doctor takes the cast off so I can walk. Anybody have any suggestions on what to melt this stuff into ? Pour it out of ? ETC ? One friend said use an old metal soup can, is this cool enough to handle with gloves ? Any advice before my first Cerrosafe expedition ?
