SAFR Action Alert
Being able to exercise your right of self defense when traveling out of state is very important. Because of that, SAFR is always seeking to increase the number of states that honor our Michigan Concealed Carry permits. Currently, the state of West Virginia only honors the permits of Virginia residents. In order for additional reciprocity agreements to be entered into, West Virginia law must be changed to allow for these agreements. This past week, SB 26 was introduced by Senator Don Caruth. SB 26 will provide that a "valid concealed handgun permit or license issued by another state is valid in West Virginia if that state grants the same right to residents of West Virginia who have valid concealed handgun permits issued pursuant to this article in their possession while carrying concealed weapons in that state."
This bill has been assigned to the Senate Judiciary Committee but no hearing has been scheduled. Your help is needed to see that this Bill is taken up this Session. Please contact the members of the Judiciary Committee, identify yourself as a Michigan resident who would like to visit West Virginia IF SB26 passes. Respectfully ask that the Bill be taken up. Calls or e-mails to the Chair and Vice Chair are of greatest importance but contacting the entire Committee will be of help as well. Please also let the Bill's Sponsors, Senators Caruth, Love, Barnes, Sypolt, Sprouse, Yoder, Hunter and White know that you are a SAFR member from Michigan and you are very interested in this Bill's passage.
