I've shot the XD9 service model (4"), and I found it to be a very easy shooting gun. Shot the XD45 in compact, and I did not shoot it nearly as well. So I'm deciding between an XD40 and XD45 in the service model. Has anyone shot both and prefer one over the other? I suppose the two guns are equally accurate. Just looking for the easier pistol to shoot transitioning from shooting all 9mm guns primarily.

I have a 45 service and love it. Everyone who shoots it loves it. Everyone who shoots it and previously said they didnt like the XD because they didnt like they're XD40 is very surprised at how nice it shoots.

I first shot the 9mm and have never shot the 40. I was in the market for a 45 and went that route.

I have heard to many friends say they hated how they're 40 shot and turned them off to the XD, shooting my XD45 changed they're minds.

Go with the 45.

As a side note. 45 is expensive to shoot though.

andrewshogun,
I've found the 45 a.c.p. to be consistantly easier to control over the .40S&W, due to the excessive muzzle flip from the .40S&W, in any frame configuration.

From my experiences, a 1911 frame has more muzzle flip and felt recoil than a Springfield XD, in 45 a.c.p. caliber. A 1911 frame is narrower and the barrel sits higher in your hand. A Springfield XD has a wider grip area (frame) and the barrel sits lower in your hand. :) Less felt recoil and muzzle flip translates into better control for repeat fire situations.

However, that's what works for ME and how I shoot a handgun. ;) Each person must decide what works best for them and stay with it. :)

Good hunting, Bowhunter57

I shot the XD 45, sold my XD 40 the next day.
Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed shooting that .40, but having a .45 ACP pistol with a higher magazine capacity, better feel in my hand, and better shooter performance out of the box sold me on it.

Get the XD 45, you won't be disappointed.

when you shot the .45 compact, did you have the pearce grip extensions or the extended mag w/ sleeve? Without either, the compact grip on any XD can be a little brutal. (i have a 9 SC and a .40 service)

With the sleeve, the grip is pretty much exactly the same as the service. They should make the .45 in the regular service grip like the .40, too.

I love both guns but the .40 has become a safe queen with the 9 SC getting the majority of carry time and HD time since it has NS and the .40 doesn't.

The .40 service may be going up for sale in the near future.

I sold my XD .45 in favor of my 1911's, but it was a fine gun, albeit a touch big for me. I still have my XD SC .40 which I really like a lot.

I won't argue with them, but I like how my XD40 shoots just fine.

Andrew the XD .45

No contest! I use to own three, now I own two XD .45's. Sold one to a newbie who loves it. The two overriding factors-- the XD .45 is Totally reliable-and very accurate!. I have both the Tactical and Service model. Recoil is not an issue-Andrew go buy one:D You will Love it the first time you shoot it!:)

The Best to You and Yours!

Have both the XD40 and XD45 service. Definately prefer the 45 over the 40. The 45 gives a push on recoil, the 40 is much more snappy, seems slower to bring back on target. Purely subjective, but even my wife shoots the 45 better than the 40, and complains less about the recoil. Her favorite pistol is a XD9, but she shoots the XD45 as well as her nine and better than the 40 as well.

i own 2 xds in .40 and i love them they fit me better than the .45acp models.
plus ammo is cheaper which is great for trainning and high volume shooting.
also if you get the .40 you can get replacement barrels in .357 sig which happens to be my favorite defense caliber and i would own one but ammo is so pricey. also you have the option of getting a 9mm replacement barrel you just have so many options with the .40 and the best thing is that you can use the same mags with all three calibers.

I had an XD40 service and traded it for an XD45 when they first came out. I have nothing negative to say about either of them except the first XD45s with the 13 rd mags are simply too big for my small hands. I liked shooting it at the range but I didn't like carrying it concealed. Maybe the newer versions would work better for me.

Anyhow, I sold the XD45, picked up an XD40 subcompact and I just recently added the Pearce grip extension to the 9rd mag. I liked it before and I love it now. I have much better control than I did and it carries well.

There's an ass for every saddle. Carry on.

I am a 45 guy, but I gave all 3 a chance and kept the XD45. It is very dependable and easy to shoot accurately.

yep i love my xd sc in .40 and the pearce extenstions are mandatory, you should put some xs 24/7 sights on there that will make the almost perfect xd sc perfect!
