I looked at a friend's XDM last week. I was impressed. I was wondering what those of you who have them think of this handgun. It points well, and has a much better trigger than I had expected.

What was your caliber choice, and do you game with it?

I think that if you want a full size pistol for range, home defense, or open carry you can't beat it. I got the 40 s&w about a year ago and it's almost as accurate as my sig 226 9mm, even with the added muzzle flip and recoil.
Some will tell you to save your money and get an xd, I say the target barrel is worth the extra hundred or so. I have never had one hiccup with the gun.
If it fits your hand and you like the overall feel of the gun you wont be disappointed with its accuracy or function-ability.

I have a total of 6 XD's, including a 9x19 XD-M. I think you'll like it. They fit my hand, point well and are very accurate.

Hope this helps.

Fred

I have small hands, and the XDM fit me well. The trigger was nice too, not at all what I was expecting.

I have an XDm in 9 and so far am not impressed. It has run flawlessly but I'm all over the target with it. And I know everyone will say that it's me, and maybe it is, but I don't shoot any of my other handguns this poorly. I just had Truglo TFOs put on but the results were the same. The next time out I'm going to try to sandbag it to decide whether it's me or the gun.

I have the XDM 40 and love it. If you buy the XDM 40 you can invest another $180 and buy a 9mm conversion barrel and magazine and you have an XDM 9 and 40 then. You can't get a conversion for the 9mm to go to 40 though.

BTW, I can drive nails with it too. It is by far the most accurate hand gun I have shot.

gdbrown I didn't know that about the conversion. Where did you get the barrel from?

I've had similiar problems with my XDm 9. Plus, shooting IPSC matches, I've found the magazines are a PITA to strip and clean between stages.

Yeah, everyone who loves their XDm says its not the pistol, its my poor marksmanship. But, I'm much more consistently accurate with my other pistols, including my XD .45 Tactical.

It is sacrilege to say anything bad about the "2009 handgun of the year". To each his own I say.

Well, I'm here to eat some crow. In post #8 above, I said I was not impressed with my XDm as far as accuracy. Today I went to the range and benchrested the pistol as best I could. I held it on a plastic bag of granular plant food on the rifle bench. Probably not the best bench resting job. I had no device to hold the gun, just my hands. I shot 10 rounds at 10 yds. The results showed that the accuracy problem was me and not the gun. I was actually glad to see that.

After that 10 rounds I started shooting it standing as I normally would and all of a sudden I'm shooting it noticeably better than I was before the bench session. So I'm cool with the XDm. I just need to practice some more and dry fire more.

I've had an XDm .40 for about 6 months now, with close to 900 rounds down the pipe. I'll be the first to admit that I fell victim to the wonderful marketing that Springfield Armory has for the XDm line, fully believing them when they say "Match Barrel" and "Match Trigger". Lies, I tell you.

In the same breath, however, the XDm seems to have not only slightly better accuracy than my friend's XD-40, but also a better trigger. Many people over at XDTalk have put in trigger kits to improve the actions on both pistols; however, I didn't find any problems with the way they are from the factory, except a bit of excessive creep and overtravel.

As far as conversion barrels are concerned, you need to note that you can go from a .40 to a .357SIG or 9mm, but you can NOT go from a 9mm to a larger caliber.
You can pick 'em up from a few places:
