I am in the market for a backpacking rifle and after some consideration, it's looking like the Ruger 10/22 is going to be my best bet. As an aside, I thought about a takedown rifle like the Henry AR7 and Marlin Papoose, but every time i found a review, the 10/22 always came up in these conversations in a positive light. My knowledge of them is next to zero save what you can find on the internet-- people turning their rugers into full auto bananna clip consuming machines, removing the stock, etc. Seems like a very versatile piece of hardware.

Since this would be a back packing gun, space and weight will be at a premium. How would you suggest modifying your Ruger 10/22 toward that end while still retaining MOS at fifty yards? Different stock? Cut the barrel down to the forearm? Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Butler creek makes a pretty decent folding stock for the 10/22. I have one on my Mini-30. That way it folds down to backpack size for you. Another forum you may want to check is perfectunion bbs. Good luck!

Back packing rifle? shooting rabbits and squirrel on the trail? Get the folding stock for compact carry and send the barrel and trigger group to Clark Customs to be tune up. The rugers are not real accurate new but clark can cut group size by half + or =. The marlins 60's tend to be more accurate stock and half the price, or close to it.

+1 to the butler creek folding stock.

Are we correct in assuming that this is for hunting small game and not protection avaunt predators? Here in Alaska a "backpacking gun" is usually for really big animal in which the 10/22 doesn't make the cut.

I have a Butler Creek folding stock an my 10/22 which is my designated "truck gun" and regardless of how you feel about folding stocks there is no dening that this is a quality piece of equipment and IMO by far the sturdiest and most reliable folding stock I have seen and given your curcumstances I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this product it truely does give your 10/22 a shorter overall length without sacrificing accuracy or durability it would be just about perfect for a camping/hiking survival type gun and I feel it offers a better alternative to Henry's AR-7 survivial rifle (by the way I own one and mine has been a complete lemon it just doesn't seem to want to cycle properly on any brand of ammo).

Yeah, I'm beginning to get that idea as well from the reviews I've been hearing. When i see that much bad press among users I start to look for alternatives. The Marlin 60 was on the list but there doesn't look to be much hope of shortening it down.

Think I could get minute of squirrel accuracy out of the 16.5 inch barrel at 50y? How about shorter?

So no bear-zombie hunting with a 22? :(

Dont overlook the Marlin 795. It weighs 4.5lbs and has a 37" OAL in it's stock configuration. I picked mine up from Gander Mountain for $110 OTD after rebate. The buttstock is hollow making it perfect for tossing a few extra rounds and/or survival supplies. I believe that Ramline made a folding stock for the Marllin Model 70 that allows the 795 to drop right in.

Just to help you out-
Ruger 10/22s do not and cannot use clips, banana shaped or otherwise. They use magazines.

Before doing any modifications, first familiarize yourself with the laws. Cutting a rifle barrel to less than 16 inches makes it illegal unless you register the receiver as a short barreled rifle (often referred to as SBR). Second, go out & shoot the rifle as it is. Until you do so, how can you know what you like about it and what needs to be changed to meet your needs and wants? I know from shooting my 10/22 (and many others in various forms) that I much prefer the sporter stock, do not like any 10/22 folding stocks I've tried and would rather have three 10 round factory mags with two in my pocket than any kind of extended magazines. I also know I want to change my sights from the standard factory sights to a post & aperture and do not want optical sights on a 22 LR. A sling is also a must.

My wants & needs are different than yours, but the only reason I know what I want for my 10/22 is because I've carried & shot it quite a bit. Buy a 10/22 or Marlin or Browning or what have you and shoot it. Start carrying it on backpacking trips. You'll end up with a much better rifle that way

Even though I'm a big fan of the 10/22 and it is a viable option, I suppose, for small game hunting on the trail. I think I would look closer at simple bolt action rifle with short barrel and stock. Simpler and easier... if dropping a rabbit or squirrel for supper very little tactical advantage is needed.

Well, evidently the OP violated someone's sensibilities by referring to clips instead of magazines. Oh look, http://www.cabelas.com/10-22-accessories-ruger-22-factory-clip-4-2.shtml Cabellas has clips for sale? Guess someone should let them know that the 1022's can't use them.

..and the marketing types tell me beer makes me more attractive to women.

Still doesn't make a magazine a clip anymore than rhetoric from Gun Control Inc. makes an S&W 500 an Assault Pistol or a Ruger Single Six a Saturday Night N*$$@# Town Special or a longarm with the back thing that folds up an Assault Weapon.

Knowing proper terminology will also keep one from from a potential ka-boom by knowing that 38 Special ammunition doesn't match a 38 S&W revolver. Calling a magazine a "clip" will get one marked as a rube in most shooting circles

For extended magazines, those from Tactical Innovations and now the new Ruger factory 25rd magazines are as reliable as the factory ten rounder.

I have a 10/22 stainless with a Butler Creek folding stock, Williams aperture sight, and a Williams firesight up front. It is my perfect truck gun and should be a great packing rifle. As far a substituting a Charger for it, I would recommend against it. Unless you are using a rest or bipod, shooting a Charger is just shooting an awkward pistol. With a folding stocked 10/22 rifle, you have the use of a full-sized stock to stabilize your shooting. That will make you MUCH more accurate for non-rested shooting.

If you are out in the woods and weight is an issue...get oneof the volquartsen lightned tensioned barrels... granted they are pricey...but they weigh next to nothing.... mine likes
remington subsonic hp's...

There is a take down conversion for the 10/22:
