I'm stuck in a motel in York PA for a few days. Today I thought I'd look for some local shops with indoor ranges.

I found Freedom Arms, but the cost was $18 for a one-day membership plus $11 per half-hour on the range. Add in 100 rounds of American Eagle or some other brand of .45 ACP and an hour's shooting would have cost $60 to $70.

Ouch!

Go down to delta's peachbottom fish and game and introduce yourself. I am sure someone there will vouch for you to shoot there as a guest. If there is no one there I don't see any one kicking you off the range. PM me.

Hey!

Yeah, Freedom Armory does seem to have a "wealthy but uniformed" target clientèle. I've only stopped in there a couple of times but the lack of any variety of useful stuff for sale made it pretty useless as a gun shop and the cost of range time and restrictions on what one might do there seemed quite at odds with my needs.

If being stuck in York for a few days is something that is likely to be part of your life from time to time, I'd suggest looking into joining West Shore Sportsmans Association just up 83 in Lewisberry. If you don't live in one of the three surrounding counties I think your membership is like $40 a year. Shoot all you want 8:00 to sundown all year round. Eight pistol/shotgun/carbine ranges, plus an indoor pistol range, 100 yd rifle range (with gongs out to almost 200 yds.), archery, trap, etc.

If you'll still be in town Thursday you could stop in during our IDPA practice (sometime around 5:30 until dark or maybe 10:00 p.m.) and pick up membership info and you can shoot with us as a guest so you can get in a little trigger time.

For our IDPA club page which has better directions: http://www.sightspracticalshooter.com/

If you won't be in town on Thursday, sorry I missed you, but you can always stop by and see if anyone's around. The membership info will be in the clubhouse on the table to the right of the door.

Freedom Armory (the time I visited) had a really quirky old guy behind the counter whose salesmanship was questionable. Just an eccentric dude.

Anyway.

I've been here:

Not the best place but might be cheaper than Freedom Arm. $15 for 30 minutes (if you use your own ammo). This is kind of steep though. Most places its $15 for an hour. The guy who ran this place was an odd ball too. They had an AK sitting there you can rent- at 50 cents a round. :barf: Also, there was a shady group hanging out there, so as someone else said- make sure you don't shoot dry, save a mag for the walk to your car.

You may want to skip the shooting this week. :scrutiny:

Yeah, York isn't what I expected. I'm staying right on Hwy 30 just west of I-83. The neighborhoods a block over on N. George Street are like the ones on the north side of Milwaukee, which is an area that I avoid at all cost.

I brought plenty of ammo, but I'm not going to burn up Federal Hydra Shoks at the range when I might need them in my motel room. ;)

Monkeyleg-

Check your PMs. I'm a member over at the aforementioned Delta Peach Bottom F&G. I'd be happy to meet up and shoot a bit today or tomorrow (after work).

Yes, Freedom Armory is VERY "value added". There are a couple indoor ranges in MD if you want to drove a bit farther.

Oh, how I miss Lake Geneva;)

That "daily membership" at Freedom Armory is just a name for that membership level. Your $18 gets you a membership that lasts for a year. The lane fees are hefty though.

And I agree with steering clear of West York Sporting Goods. You always have to call to make sure the weird guy is going to be there, he doesn't keep regular hours. The last time I called there and got an answering machine saying, "I'll be back in a few hours, I'll be at the hospital for a couple hours, and then, uh, I might be back..." I just hung up and never went back there.
