With all the 9mm vs 45ACP, 9mm vs 357SIG, 357SIG vs 40S&W threads going, I wonder what is the actual preference for caliber. Unexpanded, 45 cuts the biggest hole, 9mm and 357 are likely to give the most penetration. And don't even get me started on energy numbers on paper.

I definately don't want this to be a platform issue, but round count should play into it. Assuming equal triggers, equal recoil, equal cost of shooting, equal gun size, which would you prefer? I consider myself pretty open-minded... I grew up a 1911/45ACP guy but currently carry a 9mm CZ PCR. And would buy one in 45GAP if available with the same grip size.

I want it to be known that I voted for .45 ACP NOT .45 GAP. That Glock cartridge is HS.

equal recoil
I voted 9mm, but if equal recoil was the case I would take the 50AE, next in line the 10mm.

Wait...equal recoil...I'll take a 454 Casull....no wait, the 500 S&W.
Heck, with equal recoil I'll take a .50BMG with a realllllllly big hollow point.
Could you imagine the magazine size on that thing? A tec-9 like frame with a 6 inch long magazine. lol

Interesting groupings there. I chose 9mm/357sig because those are the two I carry, in a Sig 228 and 239 respectively.

Ironically, not as much of a showing for the .40.

I prefer to carry the .45acp, so that is waht I voted for. In reality, I usually end up carrying my j-frame .38 more than anything else.

I prefer the .45ACP cartridge in the "real world." But if "equal triggers, equal recoil, equal cost of shooting, equal gun size" then I'll take a 50BMG please!

.45 ACP of course which puts me in the majority. I wonder if the .40S&W/10mm folks are libertarians?

since i don't carry concealed, i'll have to vote for 22lr, as i have shot so much of it and it is low recoil, low cost.:D
i do love my colt 1911 pistols, so i will have to say 45 has a certain allure.:neener:

I seem to be picking up .40 caliber firearms at the moment: my last three were all .40s. All together, I have 6 .40s at the moment.

I can't speak from experience, but I can answer what cartridge I would prefer if it was about equal recoil, equal cost, etc... I would pick the 20x110mm Hispano.

.50 BMG (top), 20x110mm Hispano (bottom).

ACP!! Not GAP!

Only pistols I have now are 1911 varients in ACP, so that is what I carry. I certainly have experimented abit over the years. But I kept coming back to my first love and that is where I will stay.

caliber, not platform.

I'd like Fluff's Warthog.

Platform has to be a factor.

But my 'always' sidearm is a NAA 32...My 'almost always' sidearm is either a J-Frame, or a 9X19...My 'cool weather, when I can get away with it' gun is a K-Frame Mdl 13...

Now that its been 'Tunerized', rapidly moving up to challenge he Mdl 13, is a OM 45 ACP.

salty.

I'd settle for the .45 Super, if recoil

was the same as a 9mm. But it's not, so the entire post is rendered pretty meaningless., Recoil effects the speed of repeat hits, or hits on other targets, so it's definitely an issue for a defensive pistol.
