Greetings -

I'm looking for first-hand information on the Ruger Mini-14 in 6.8 spc. How accurate have you found the rifle to be? How has it performed for you in the field as a hunting rifle? Do you think the rifle/cartridge combo would be a capable 250-yd deer rifle (with proper shot placement, of course)? Many thanks.

the cartridge is definately capable of 250 yard kills but I do not know its accuracy in the mini. In the past the mini's have not been all that accurate unless they were modified or you got one of the newer target models. RG

They haven't been available for long enough to have been through a few deer seasons.

I was thinking real hard about getting one at one time. The things that turned me off of it:

  1. 6.8, while ballistically a better cartridge than 7.62x39 at a distance, is not much better within the range that I usually hunt deer, and is nowhere near .308 Win in terms of ballistics. Couple that with the usual price of 6.8 and it becomes a detracting factor for me.
  2. Lack of high capacity magazines.
  3. Ruger's walking zero barrels (although they may have fixed this to some extent I hear).

I ended up just saving my money and getting an M1A, which is what I really wanted anyway. I still wouldn't mind owning one of the Mini-14's in 6.8, or a Mini-30 though. They are very handy rifles.
