As the title says: I would like to hear your experiences with Longshot powder in pistols especially the 40 S&W but other calibers as well. I know it is louder than most but is it accurate, is it clean, how it meters and acts that kind of stuff. Include your favorite loads with the caliber you used it on. This is so I will know more about what to expect when I start loading my own cases with it.

Longshot is a slow burning high velocity powder. It meters well, burns OK clean and really can pack a wallop.

I use it for high performance loads in my 10MM and 40 S&W. If you want bunny fart loads, forget it, if you want top velocity SD, Hunting loads give it a try.

From Hodgdon.

This spherical powder is the most versatile shotshell heavy field propellant Hodgdon has ever produced. Great loads in 10 ga., 12 ga., 16 ga., 20 ga., and 28 ga. are shown in Hodgdon’s Reloading Data Center. This propellant provides true magnum velocities with superb patterns. In addition, LONGSHOT is the best choice for those competitors shooting games such as "Buddy", "Annie Oakleys" and more. LONGSHOT is the high velocity pistol choice in 38 Super, 40 S&W, and 357 SIG at lower than usual operating pressures.

I have used Longshot with great success in 9MM, 38 Super, 40 S&W, 45 acp. It is really nice to have one powder that works so well in so many calibers. I used to use Unique for these but greatly prefer LS.

Buddies(also called protection) and Annie Oakleys are trapshooting games. Usually shot from 27 yard line on back. Object of first game is to back your partner up if he misses. Annie's are usually 3-4 shooters in line that try to break the target if the man in line before them misses.
I shoot these games 3 nites a week and are a whole lot of fun!

Thanks. Sounds very fun.

I use it in 10mm, .40, 38 spcl. +p, and 9mm. It burns clean, produces very high performance (fps), is extremely accurate, and pressures are very easy to manage. In most of the loads I run it in, I have worked up to well above the published max. and have had no problems managing pressures. It doesn't perform as well at mid or low end published data in my experience. Dirty and inconsistent velocity at lower end charges has been my personal experience.

I don't know how it meters, as the only experience I have in this respect is from my Mec. 600, I weigh each pistol charge on a beam scale.

My experience with Longshot:
+ Good powder for high end loads
+ Seems to deliver high velocity without exceeding SAAMI pressure limits
+ Burns fairly clean
+ Delivers good accuracy

- Tends to be a little flashy
- Longshot can be renamed Loudshot, it does make a big boom

IMO the good outweighs the bad so I like it and I use it. (I probably missed some of the good and bad)

Note, it is rumored Hodgdon brought out Longshot to replace HS-7 (W571) and it just might be true although I did like W571/HS-7 more!

I'm using it in my 180gr .40 cal loads and it shoots great out of my FN and Taurus .40 cal pistols. Meters just fine out of the Lee Autodisc's as well.

I'm using 7.2 gr under 180gr Berry's plated bullets.

Haven't tried it in .45 ACP yet, but may just do it. I love W231 for .45 and don't really want to try anything else.....;)

I have two SIG Sauer .40s which I shoot Montana Gold 180-grain ball out of, pushed with 7.5 grains of Longshot. Very good SD emulation round in my opinion, and Longshot is my exclusive powder for the .40- it is fantastic.

I almost forgot to mention how well it works in shotgun loads too. I've been using it for high end loads, like turkey, pheasant, and water foul loads. But again, it isn't a good reduced load powder in any of it's applications though.

Using a 165gr Montana Gold JHP bullet loaded to 1.125" OAL and SPP, out of a M&P40C:
7.5gr ~1100fps
7.3gr ~1050fps

I settled on 7.3gr because someone next to me mentioned that the brass was ejecting quite far and to also keep it under 1150fps.

Going to order a F1 chronograph on the 3rd to see what my factory rounds are doing. Then I'll start low and work up hopefully get a recipe that matches the factory load. Having problem find the bullets to load them. Have everything else except a tumbler.

The WWB 165 FMJFP I shot was ~1000fps out of the same pistol mentioned above.

I've just started using it in 357 magnum...very magnum...for a long range predator/varmint load in my revolvers. Thus far it meters very well is consistent and clean/zero unburnt powder with no adverse pressure signs from a load posting very good velocity. Nothing negative to say What-so-ever
