I currently have a Mauser 8mm manufactured in Yugoslavia M48BO. I am currently working up some hand loads. I am using the Hornady OAL gauge with their bullet comparator. I seem to be getting measurements of 2.368 in. as an average , this being from base to ogive on a sierra 175 gr. SP bullet. This measurement would seem to have the bullet deeply seated in the cartridge case and would indicate a short freebore. Has anyone made similar measurements on this Mauser variant.

Welcome to THR, Mauser1950

That Sierra 175gr SP is listed at the Hodgdon load site as 3.100 for COAL, measured of course to the tip.
What does your round measure to the tip, using say, .020 off the lands.

We need to talk apples to apples with these dimensions.

If you are indeed too short to the leade for some reason, have you checked the headspace to see if you have room to run a chamber reamer to clean up the freebore? Maybe you can have someone look at the chamber and throat with a borescope to check for problems.

Thanks for the suggestion NCsmitty. The COAL is approximately 2.872 jn measured from tip to base. When a Hornady bullet comparator is used to measure from Ogive to base the result is 2.376 plus or minus 0.003. After some experimentation the best groups ( 0.75 in ) seem to be COAL 2.950 and use of comparator 2.450 +.- 0.003 in.. With these groups I would hesitate to disturb anything.
