I know these don't knock someone out like on TV or movies, but how well do these work? And which ones, o a lower level than a Taser, what are the best? Or even if not a flashlight, but just a zapper.
Thanks.

I am not familiar with these, I have a few very bright flashlights that can temporarily confuse a attacker that would hopefully give me time to deploy my defense, that would likely be a handgun.

They are gimmicks. The zapper portion is normally not strong enough to be useful for self-defense. When I worked in corrections we had some officers want to carry these on duty. A bunch got tested by the sheriff's office and none of them were approved for use.

I have one. The thing worked great for about the first six months. Now it has to be recharged at the end of each day even though I don't use it.
The flashlight still works great though.

It's a fun toy. That's it just a shockingly fun toy. Buy a taser if funds are available. They work, used them twice and worked like a charm. But my boss has tazed a few hopped up on something and he said it didn't work.

I have a question how do you know if it worked good without testing it, if it did not put you on the ground then why even have it. Plus I would think cloths would affected it. Cops has proven teasers and naked people does not work to well lol.

A good Taser's (big T, brand name) prongs will go through thin clothing. Clothing is only one variable in the effectiveness of an electrical discharge weapon (EDW). Someone running around naked is usually on some sort of narcotic that disrupts pain communications with the brain. Which is why you will find videos of a naked person with 10 Taser leads coming out of their body. Models like the Taser X2 and X26 will also do a contact stun, like a stun gun that uses prods that arc between them. Doing a contact stun test is a more reliable way to test the battery life than relying on the indicator screen, according to my instructors anyway.

I have always been a naysayer, but after I watched the only decent video on how to use a small stun gun did I come away with a bit less suspicion. They generate pain, I think if one trains with that in mind they may work to someones advantage, I think for the less trained, they offer something to repel or help break contact.

what I would like to see is someone deploying this to augment a hold, say to the armpit, groin, throat / neck, close to where there are larger nerves. I don’t know I remain skeptical.

This is called "pain compliance." Inflicting relatively small amounts of pain to get someone to comply. This is what I used contact or drive stuns for in corrections. When struggling with an inmate, I went for large mass areas of the body like the thigh or small of the back while avoiding areas off limits because of department policy such as the face and groin. A long enough contact stun on bare skin will singe hair and make small burn marks. I had 4 neat little oval scabs on my forearm for about 3 months after my initial certification. Relating to the topic at hand, the zapper flashlights do not generate as much pain as a dedicated Taser. Taser failures are well documented and I have witnessed several.

Electricity will mess up tho. When I was 17 went to a MVA when I was in the fire department. Lady hit a power pole, i was putting road flares out as we waited for the power company to cut power. It was raining very heavy. The pole the lady hit the ground when I was about 50feet away, it also has a transformer.

I woke up the next day in the hospital, stayed for 3 weeks. Those teasers seem to do best when there able to make your muscles contacted but don't know if they can make them that powerful anymore.

The reason Tasers work is that the contact points are separated enough to cause the current to jump across major nerves and muscle groups. The little zappers, in addition to being generally of shoddy make, have contact points only an inch or two apart. Exponentially less effective.
