Zastava M70 parts compatibility with mauser aftermarket?

They say that you should fear the man with one rifle, because he knows how to use it.

Nothing quite as ominous, but I want to have one rifle, that I shoot often, and know how to use well.

I was looking around. I like the Zastava LK M-70. That's the serbian mauser, made with modern techniques and technology. Has been imported under the Interarms and Charles Daly brands, and as the Remington 798.

Does anyone know anything about this? I heard it's a sweet little rifle, but a little rough, might need to be smoothed by a gunsmith.

Since it is basically a mauser k98, do any of the aftermarket mauser parts, like firing pin springs, magazine spring, barrels, and triggers work with it?

Would it actually need any modification other than smoothing out the action, from those that have used it?

And is it possible to make it use a detachable magazine?

It seems like an unknown diamond to me. Any thoughts?

Good reliable rifles. They can be refined a bit with a little care and patience. Firing pins, springs, and most other pieces will work, usually after minimal fitting. As for the detachable magazine, I'm not sure if the magazine systems available will work with the bottom metal but then again I've never tried it.

I am waiting to get the .308 mannlicher ordered through my ffl. the only thing i know is m98 scope bases fit. try finding a pdf manual, i have seen them onine. will post more when i actually get mine in my hands/d33

I have a Zastava M70 in 300 WM that resides with my brother as I am seldom in the States. I can tell you I want the stock, trigger, and safety switched out. I view it as an intermediate term project. As the rifle comes, it is solid as a tank but completely unrefined: at least that was my impression.

Here's an excerpt from an email my brother sent me:

So, the only "problem" with the Zastavas is this, they have a proprietary shape on the triggerguard/bottom metal that differs from the standard M98 large ring pattern just enough that the bottom metal will not fit in a stock cut for a M98 large ring. What's funny about that is that you can take a standard M98 bottom piece and bolt it onto a Zastava action and it fits perfectly. I've been having a running discussion with the guy that sold you the rifle...about customization possibilities with Zastava actions. He usually does the replacement of trigger guard, and blammo, perfect fit into a Boyd's stock. If you want to, and I'm not sure I'm advocating this, you could look into an Accurate Innovations stock.

I have the synthetic version in 270 and for the money it is delightfully good. Very accurate, 10 shot 100y groups about 1.2 inches shot without letting the barrel cool down more than about 30 seconds between shots. Never had a misfeed or jam.

I smoothed up with just a little use. Bulletproof gun with beaut deep blueing.

Certainly a great base for a custom project too.
