I'm having a hard time finding good data on zeroing one of these, I know with a 5.56 round most LE zero to 50 yards, which also puts your zero out around 225 as the bullet drops.

I guess my main question is how different is the trajectory of a 7.62 round and is there a "short" zero distance like the 50 = 225 yard zero?

Depends a lot of the rifle, the load and how far you sights/scope is above the bore.

For an M14 type rifle, a 25 yard zero is pretty close to a 200 meter zero with M80.

What load are you using?

Are there any good rules of thumb for zeroing/ammo types?

Download a free ballistics program like Remington Shoot.
http://www.remington.com/pages/news-and-resources/downloads/remington-shoot-software.aspx

Change the default sight height from 1.5" to 2.5" for your AR.
Change the zero range to 200.
Change the sight-in range to 50.

Find the .308 Win bullet weight you plan to use, and click on shoot.
Then look at "Calculate" + "Ballistic report".

If will not be right due to your short barrel velocity loss, but it's close enough to get you in the ball park.
