I bought an old Rem 700 today

I went to a gun show.
I saw a Rem 700 7mmRemMag with Redfield scope for $350.
I said, "I will give you $300 without the scope."
The old guy went for it.

I was thinking I would use the action, put a synthetic stock and a new 7mm barrel on it, cut threads and chamber.

I got it home, and it is a 1963 rifle.

There is nothing wrong with the wood in the stock, but half the varnish is gone. I have scrubbed the rest of the Remington varnish off 22s and then put mineral oil on the stocks. That works for me.

It has a stainless steel barrel with some kind of black coating.
I put a a 20" Nite Ize Fiber Optic Adapter/AA Mini Mag-Lite up the breech and looked down the bore with a magnifier [ the poor man's bore scope]
There is nothing really wrong with the barrel, other than the black coating is flaking off in places.

I wondered about that SS barrel, but a little digging taught me that they came that way.

That seems like a good find. I never run up on a gun I'm wanting. Maybe I just need to "look" and not be so specific. I'll try to get out of the tunnel vision and see whats out there.Maybe then I'll see some deals!

I see you plan to make a few changes. You'll have a rifle that really suits you then. Sounds like you'll have fun getting it there and then finding the load it likes.

I would shoot it first. It might be a shooter. 63grns of IMR7828 and a 160 grn Accubond will go into a dime @ 100yards with my old 7mm mag. Those old chambers ( pre80's) have a lot of freebore in them. If its be taken care of it might not be shot out.

I used to work in a gun shop. I don't ever remember seeing a post 60's production gun in larger caliber that was used up. I suspect the vast majority have less than a hundred rounds thru them. Few guys are gonna sit behind a 7 mag and crank off fifty rounds at a stretch.

Look on the barrel, on left side just in front of action. If thhere iis a heart stamped on tthe barrel it is a stainless barrel made by Hart, they made some barrel for Rem. back in that time. Al

I see it, but it is on the right side of the action.

I have other Hart barrels here.
I now see variations in Hart Quality with my poor man's bore scope.

This 7mmRM Remington Hart has a few light chatter marks in the lands. The grooves have streaks parallel with the grooves.

The 308 Hart has no chatters on the lands, but has the same streaks on the grooves.

The 6mmPPC Hart is like a mirror on the lands and in the grooves.

1960s Remingtons are fantastic, better then the new ones IMHO. Nice buy for $350
