Yesterday I was at an indoor range and as I was waiting for three guys to get off my lane, I was watching them shoot. They were shooting an AR-15 of some flavor at 7 yards. I wouldn't really care, but then I started counting between shots. It was easily 3-4 seconds.

I know we all start somewhere and I'm no competitor or fantastic shooter, but yikes it was hard to watch.

We often discuss good shooting on THR, but what's the worst shooting you've ever witnessed?

#1 as long as fellow shooters are safe, I'm good with whatever their skill is. Unless I'm trying to help them.

#2 The most interesting shooter I've been to the range with is puzzling to watch shooting short range handguns. He makes one shot, puts the gun down, leans over the bench, squints and tries to see where the hole in the paper is. Then he repeats the process, one shot at a time. This is at 10 yards or less with say an LCP or 4" revolver.

Ha! Well it certainly may be your shooting.

No I'm not talking safety here. We've all read thread after thread about that. And they can do whatever they want as long as they aren't hurting anyone.

I'm just talking poor accuracy, poor technique, super slow shooting. That kind of thing. It's s chance for us all to think about the good parts of our own shooting.

On an up note, the gents I was watching WERE hitting their target.

I once watched a guy close his eyes right before he pulled the trigger on what looked like a sporterized Mauser. It was really strange because he didn't just close his eyes like he was going to sleep, he closed them hard like someone hit him in the stomach and he was wincing in pain. He went on to tell us that he has hunted all over the country and how he is the best shot out of everyone in his hunting camp!?!?!?!

My mother shooting her LCP carry gun. It has a laser so you can see the dot move all around the target and off it. She can't put all her rounds on a 18 x18 target at 5 yards.

I used to shoot by a older guy and I would hang targets out for him at 25 yds. I'd spot for him once in a while and never saw any holes in the paper. Finally had to ask if he was shooting blanks. I do think his eye sight was failing.

I watched someone put TWO bullets in the ceiling. Both times they were shooting a revolver in single action mode. He pulled the hammer back, pointed the gun at the ceiling with his finger on the trigger, and as he extended his arm toward the target...BOOM.

No idea why he had his finger on the trigger at the point.

I've occasionally seen some people struggling to stay on the paper at 7 yards, and when I do I strike up a conversation that eventually leads to passing on some tips. It has been greatly appreciated every time. Seeing the smile on their face when their groups shrink and they realize 'I can do this' is a cool thing.

I'm capable of some pretty bad shooting when I'm standing trying to shoot a rifle that doesn't fit well or that I'm unaccustomed to.

I've also had some horrible days with shotguns, ducks and doves and clays and trap.

I watched a guy walk into the range with a semi-auto pistol raised above his head, talking boisterously to his friend about what a great shot he is. He then proceeded to put a full magazine into the dirt a few feet in front of him. I seem to recall that it might have been a Desert Eagle, but it's been so long ago that I can't remember for certain. If I hadn't seen it, I'd swear it was made up.

Many years ago I saw three gentlemen of the Asian persuasion come to my gun club's 50 yard range during public shooting hours. They had a very elaborate, clearly very expensive, Olympic-style .22 rimfire - thumbhole stock with numerous adjustments, palm rest, hooked buttplate - the works. An enormous riflescope was mounted on top.

As they were setting up, they assured me they knew what they were doing, since they all had "been in the military." (I didn't ask which country.)

After firing a few shots, they noticed they were shooting off to one side . . . so they took the rifle, wedged the barrel between legs of the shooting bench, and endeavored to bend it to the correct side in order to bring point of impact to the center of the crosshairs. :what:

Several years ago,,,

I went out to the desert to shoot with a group of friends,,,
They all had AR's, AK's, and SKS's,,,
I had a K98 Mauser.

They stood in a line with their high cap magazines,,,
They were aiming at a toilet bowl and tank,,,
It was about 100 yards away.

I, being the only bolt shooter that day,,,
Counted down for them to destroy the toilet,,,
Well over 100 rounds went down the range at the toilet.

When the dust settled there it was,,,
Not one round had touched it.

I chambered one round and blew it apart.

They quit teasing me about my "antique" rifle.

Honestly, these were all younger men with good eyes,,,
One had even been in the infantry for 3 years,,,
Yet none of them could hit a fixed target.

They were all just having fun,,,
Turning their ammo money into noise.

I've taken teenage co-eds to the range who did better than these men.

Although not exactly a range, (many years ago, maybe late 1970's) I was participating at a live pigeon/turkey shoot. It was a similar set up on the line as skeet in Hegins PA where they released live birds from a box one at a time or maybe two if I recall.
The owner of the bird(s) did not want his bird(s) shot as they prized them and trained them somehow to fly a certain way, the shooters paid to kill them.
Also they paid to eat and drink beer. It was half keg party / half serious sporting event at least from my perspective.
While waiting my turn, a rather intoxicated shooter, standing next to me had his shotgun go off unintentionally, and it blasted the ground on the line just a foot or so to his right and just a few feet to my left.
That day probably forever burned the idea in my head that drinking and firearms don't mix.
I never went back to that event and it has since been shut down in the 90's.
I have taken no stance either way on the humane issues of this "sport" but that used to be one crazy event as the day grew longer.

Many years ago just before opener of deer season, at a small local range with only one shooting spot I was watching an individual I knew slightly. He had an old Rem 700 in 30-06 and a .22 WMR marlin. both were so beat up and abused they were hardly recognizeable. He work the bolt on the rifles several times to break them loose from the rust, I finally ended up loanig him a can of WD-40 out of my truck to spray them down with, they finally would function and cycle. Honestly I have no idea where the bullets were hitting though I was too fascinated with the weaponry.

You may could have made a little money off that guy.

"Well, I'm prolly not as good a shot as you are, but would you care to place a little wager on who can shoot the tightest group."

I watched a couple dozen idiots try to hit a car from 75 yards a couple years ago.

Most of them missed.

The time I dumped one into the dirt at a handgun silhouette match. But the bullet ricocheted into the turkey, tinked it on an edge, the turkey turned sloooowly, wobbbbly, dramatically, and finally fell down. It was like an over-acting cowboy getting shot in a western movie. It was like a tapped ten-pin in a seven-ten split in bowling. It was as if it took three whole minutes to fall over.

But it was really only about three seconds.

I asked my scorer if that counted. He said, "It fell down after you went bang, so it counts."

Well, come to think of it, maybe that was the best worst shot I ever made.

Great story. :)

1. saw a guy in 3rd lane(from left) hit nothing but the WALLS(to the left of lane 1) target @ 15 feet--YIKES

2.plenty of shooters cannot hit full human sized silouette targets @10 feet

3.worst seen: nra instructor with newbie shooting fullsized target @5 feet--missing the target period!!! then wanted to shoot 9mm not 45 acp-- what was the instructor thinking?:banghead:

Not quite what the op is after.

But I once scored like 50 30-06 cases off the ground at a 5 yard pistol bay once????

I assume a garand and I can picture the bayonet cutting the target while they're trying to shoot it

To many

1. A high power rifle fired at a 100 yd target, while a person was there, changing targets. 2. Hole in ceiling of the indoor range. 3. A guy fliched so bad, bullet hit 25 yards in front of the 100 yd target, shooting bench rest. 4. A guy bounced a 45acp bullet off the side wall of the indoor range (Clark custom long slide jammed). 5. Anyone that has to get closer than 25 yds to practice with a handgun (buy a shotgun). 6. Old guy sighting in scoped slug gun at 50 yds. One would hit the target, next would not be on target anywhere. This happened over and over. After a close inspection of the target, ammo was mixed, bird shot & slugs.

The other day I was at the range shooting a 22lr and 9mm encore for accuracy

A guy beside me was commenting about trying to determine if the neck turned cases made a difference in his AR

It was a 50 yard bay.

I have been known to make bets with people at the range... Put the target at any reasonable distance and, with any gun, I will put 100 rounds through only TWO holes!!! Pretty bold gamble, right? They usually respond "Ha! Right. What's the catch?". My response is "well, I will put 1 hole within the boarders of the paper and then all my other shots will go through the hole on the outside of the paper". :D
