I've had a great time building AR. I've built them in 5.56, 223 Wylde. 300 Blackout and .277 Wolverine, but never a big bore. So I have decided to go big on my next build.
The rifle's not going to be a range toy so cost of ammo will not be a big factor. After doing some homework I have decided on the 458 Socom.
Here is what I have on order right now.
Anderson 458 Socom stripped upper.
Brownell's 458 Socom BCG.
XXTreme Cryo Treated heavy barrel.
Davidson Defense Ultimate Ar-15 Flat Wire Recoil Buffer Spring.
5 0z. heavy buffer
LaRue MBT trigger.
A friend has offered to make me a muzzle break.
I plan to use a milspec Anderson lower, but haven't decide on the butt stock.
I also plane to handload for it.
So for those of y'all that have big bore AR, any input would be welcome.

Looks like you got a good list for your build!

the standard fixed stock seems to get recommend the most offten. Supposed to help with recoil, and some folks I guess have had collapsible stocks, collapse on the shot.

I ignored that advice and went with a ATI Taclite and and recoil pad, and it worked well. The pad is heavy and brought some of the weight back, which helped balance the gun more.
It, coupled with the heavy grip, and heavy scope, brought the total weight of my rifle to almost 9lbs unloaded, which might not be the best configuration, but it worked well for what I did.

I have the Houge overall molded stock on one rifle and the Magpul MOE rifle stock on some others. I’ll be able to try them out. I also have an A2 rifle stock in my extra parts that I can start with. I’ll most likely pick up a Magpul MOE rifle stock for the rifle.
I’ve got a set of Magpul backup sights, but will pick up a 1-4 or 1-6 power scope for it.
The upper arrived today .

I got an email earlier that stated that my Delta Team Tactical order was shipped today so, the barrel should be here soon.

Now I need to start looking for dies and bullets for reloading.

A buddy came buy and snagged most of my socom stuff but I'll see if I've got anything left that might be useful and send it over.

Hornady ftx's work, and I tried some Berry's 350 grn which seem to feed perfectly as dummy rounds. I can send you a few bullets to try out if you'd like. The dies I got were Lee, and they seem to be good for sizing and seating. Gonna have to order a crimp die though I think.

I'll be watching as I am building a 450 Bushmaster myself. Deer hunting laws helped me decide.
I have an Anderson lower and a Bear Creek Arsenal barrel.
LaRue trigger, CMT slick side upper and Brownells BCG ordered.
Have take inventory of parts on hand and get everything else coming.

With that long neck and lotsa contact I don't think you need to crimp unless you really want to. Even with my Raddical which would catch the tip of flat pointed bullets I never had setback or pull issues.

Oh I used Lee dies also no issues

I’d like to know what you think of that BCA barrel. I’ve been thinking of getting one.

Thanks Gunny (and curses from my bank account) for the tip on Delta Team Tactical. I checked out their website and they have some interesting stuff with some great prices that will probably spur me to at least acquire some parts from them for my next build.

Thanks for the offer, but I don’t have a die set yet.

Going down same road starting with Aero upper, not sure on barrel, still have not decided between 458 Socom or 450 Bushmaster.

458 SOCOM? Oh yeah! that's the ammo that looks like it is tapered on the wrong end. I'm glad you are 'gonna reload for it as buying new ammo is like reloading for my 50 BMG.......Expensive
Keep the pictures coming as they make my day!

I think you are making a mistake.

.50 Beowulf is more biggerer and the most bestest! :p
