Getting ready for my first Big Bore AR.

Giving it some thought and thinking it will be between the Rock River and the PSA. The Hellbreaker is for another project that’s been on the back burner. The Aero Gen2 has the wider flar on the mag well, but I don’t see myself doing quick mag changes with this gun, might save it for another build.
This is what I plan to have engraved on the right side of the lower.

Been doing some reading and think I’m going to be giving 300 and 325 gr bullets a try at first.
I just go my package from Delta Team Tactical. Now I have my,
Flat wire buffer spring.
5oz buffer.
Low profile gas block.
And the barrel.

The markings are at the front, top, of the barrel.

It’s dimpled for the set screw .

I’ll give it a good cleaning before the build.

I’m going to drop the barrel off to my buddy at Aklys Defense on Monday. Zack is going to make me a muzzle break and time it for the barrel.

Which barrel did you get? The .875" or the .936" one? ( From delta TeamTactical) Site is a little confusing, shows two different size barrels, .875 or .936. .875 is more expensive, 99.99 instead of 89.99. It says out of stock, but also notes that for 3 days it is on sale for 104.99!

I got the .936 that was on sale for $88.99. They should have them back in stock in a week or two.

I dropped off the barrel with Zack over at Aklys Defense. He said that he should have the brake finished early next week.
They make some pretty cool stuff over at Aklys .

On the way home I stopped in at BJ Pawn & Gun to drop of the upper to have it engraved and to have him engrave a dust cover also. It should be ready in a day or two.
While I was there I checked out the AR parts and spotted the Fang trigger guard by Strike Industries. I liked it so I bought it for this build.

I’ve decided to use the Rock River lower and will drop it off tomorrow to have it engraved.

Received the Upper receiver today, an Aero Precision for .458 Socom, now waiting for Delta team tactical to notify me of barrel in stock. Will likely also use one of their low profile gas blocks. So far, I believe I will use the Brownell bolt carrier group.

I have the idea of building the upper and using it on one of my existing Lowers. This raises the question of spring and buffer weight. Im sure the standard carbine setup isnt ideal. I see the buffer Gunny used, I guess I will copy cat. Is the spring standard AR15 stuff, or is a special one required for the .458?

My buddy has a 458 Socom and runs a heavy buffer with a standard carbine spring. I went with a flat wire carbine spring because, it was on sale and I’ve been told that they last longer.

I also understand they are less inclined to make that funny "sprong" noise some ARs make when cycling. Did the spring also come from Delta Team Tactical?

We think too much alike sometimes, Gunny. I have Bullet Bill painted onto my 458 SOCOM modified mags to help more easily identify them.

I actually had a 7oz buffer in my .458 and a heavy spring, that radical didnt

Heavy grease also helps stop the spring, sproing....can't..stand...the...SPROING!

Most of my mags are stainless or pmags. Have lancer mags, but none of them made/marketed for .458. In hindsight, I probably should have picked visually different mags for my different cartridges, since I have 4 different types... oh well...

Is there a benefit to use heavier buffer, say 7oz over 5 oz?

Sorry I didn't finish typing that it seems.
What I meant to write was. That Radical upper ran fine with all the weight and heavier spring, but recoil didn't seem to change that much.

My buddy told me that the issues you run into with the 458 Socom is when you go subsonic. If your buffer is to heavy and your gas system to long, it will short stroke. He said that a pistol gas system works best for running subsonic.
I told him that I didn't plan to shoot subsonic loads and would pretty much stay with the 300 to 350 gr bullets. He told me that I shouldn't have any trouble with the carbine gas system and 5 oz buffer.

Just curious- what do people use these for besides range fun? Seems like they would be ideal for tracking wounded dangerous game though.

That sounds right to me. I never did subs with mine tho I did have some down loaded 405s.
I had an even heavier buffer (that actually got gutted and used in my last AR build) but never tried it. I eventually swapped back to a regular carbine spring, and carbine buffer in mine, as my .300aac upper didn't even come close to cycling with the heavy stuff in the stock.

I shot a couple feral cows with Rem 405s from mine. Only round I've seen go clean thru one of those broadside high shoulder.

Shot a couple pigs with the 300gr nosler balistic tips, and the "WACK" sound that produces is amazing. Kills really quick for a 1900fps bullet too.

It is one of the legal options to hunt deer with in several states. Iowa was shotgun only for many years until muzzle loader, handgun and now certain strait wall cartridges in rifles. Quite a few other states have similar laws.
