Yesterday was a fairly typical range outing, I usually carry 3 or more to spread out on the bench to shoot. This particular day was my Randall .45, Ruger Std. .22 and the CZ85. So I lay them on gun rugs left to right and load the magazines laying the appropriate magazine next to it's respective gun, then decide where I'm going to start. I started with the .22 and fired about 50 rounds, moved next to the Randall also about 50 rounds.
I love the CZ and often save it for last. I pick it up and insert the magazine firmly, I'm not one to whack em in. About 5/8" from latching in it hit a hard stop as if it just wasn't made for that gun, took me a minute to process that, I took it out looking for bent lips or anything else that could cause the issue. After a moment of perplexity I reinserted it just fine, though in hind sight a little bit stiff. Bringing the gun up and racking the slide results in a .22 case ejecting perfectly to my right.
Apparently it had bounced into the open mag well of the CZ while I was shooting the .22 thus I was trying to insert the CZ mag on the rogue case.Upon inspecting the case it had a sharp crease in the mouth probably from trying to insert the mag the first time. The second attempt I suppose it layed flat on top of the 9mm cartridges allowing me to seat the mag.
Looking back on the whole event I wish I had asked the range staff to wind back security camera footage so we could get a good laugh at the look on my face when the .22 popped out of the CZ.
I would love to hear other stories about outlandish goofy things at the range.
