But then my son told me, "Dad, I really don't want to use your 45-70, I'm afraid I'll see a deer, get excited, and forget to hold on. Then the scope will bite me in the face!"

Well, obviously I couldn't argue with the logic of a new hunter 9yr old, so I started looking thru my rifles for a better option for him. I was thinking my 6.5 grendel AR, but it is a bit heavy to carry all day. All my other options have too long of a stock LOP for him.
So I went to the gun store to look for a kid friendly sling, and hanging right there on the front wall was this compact Ruger Hawkeye.

It didn't have a scope, but I got it out the door for $500. Yanked the rings and scope off my other M77 Hawkeye and now we have a nice little 308 deer gun for the kids. I'm going to load up some 125 grn light loads for him, since a 16.5" 308 is going to kick with full house loads. Should be a good rifle for him to grow into, and the next two kids can use it after him. Really thought I was done buying rifles....

But he’s only nine. How did you think you were getting out of it that cheap?;)

Congratulations!
On the rifle find, and on the ability to listen to your son. If he likes it, you’ll have a hunting partner for life. Not being smashed in the face with a scope aught to help with that.:D

Good job, Dad!:)

Good job ... and sounds familiar. Many years ago, my daughter didn't like the recoil from a .30-30; she ended up with a nice Model 7 in .243. She's married now, so I'm off the hook (she still has the .243).

I thought I was done, until my grandkids started shooting. first was the 2 pink savage rascals. then a 10/22 with collapsible stock for steel challenge, then a mark 2. Now a savage youth hunter in 243. Now the oldest one wants a prairie dog gun.

Nice gun at a nice price! A new Hawkeye is going for over double that price around here -- MSRP is currently $1269.

If you think you're done buying rifles, hanging around this forum will weaken your resolve.
Yeah I have been influenced a lot by this specific forum. And have an overwhelming collection of rifles. I just don't have very many short stocked ones. Now my 6 yr old wants a lefty bolt gun to fit her. She it gonna have to wait a bit though...

I can never say that. I'm an impulse buyer and the only way to stop buying is if I never look online or go into gun stores. I don't see that happening anytime soon!

Good luck with your kids and your inevitable future purchases! ;)

Years back, my youngest daughter decided she wanted to feed hunt with me. I didn't have anything she could handle and shoot. So we went looking and found a Kimber 84M in 7mm08. It was very easy for her to handle and shoot. It shoots plain old Remington corelocks, it will almost shoot a single hole 3 shot group at a 100 yards. I liked it so much, I had my dealer order a 84M classic select, for me in .257 Roberts. It has become my go to rifle, now days. My daughter hunted with me a couple seasons and that was about it for her. Now the 7mm08 is used by my grandson. I had never had much experience with light weight rifles before, I started messing with the Kimbers. I find the way the stock is shaped, and the way they balance, makes them most comfortable rifles for smaller frame shooters, to shoot.
