This is absolutely a cartridge in search of a need, but it was a fascinating exercise with Chat GPT. I asked it about wildcats based on the 222 Remington case. Then, whether it could extrapolate ballistic performance data for wildcat cartridges. We then developed an hypothetical wildcat cartridge based on a 222 case shortened to 1.430” (just above the shoulder), and blown out to seat a .358 bullet. It specs out as the 9x36 mm. The AI recommended several names, of which I preferred the 358 Titan. I asked the AI to compare performance of this hypothetical wildcat to: 358 Herret, 358 Max, and the 350 Legend:
If you could integrate access to Quickload, this would be a rather cool tool indeed.
Anyway, it was an interesting exercise. And with a marketing budget, I’m confident that the 358 Titan could be as marvelously not new and unnecessary as so many cartridges we have seen launched Although it does seem like a rather nice carbine round. More or less a rimless 357 Herret.
