Modern Bolt Action 7.62x39?

I just picked up one of the Remington 799s from CDNN a couple of weeks ago. I haven't had a chance to shoot it yet, but the fit and finish is quite nice, and for $399 its a steal. Not to hijack the thread, but one thing i have heard is that you have to be careful about scope ring height or there can be bolt handle-scope interference problems. Does anyone know what height rings are required?

To the OP: I have heard that the 799 is much like a shrunken Sako action, so I guess that's fairly modern. For $399 they are probably the cheapest way to get into 7.62x39 bolt gun fun.

This is my recent new799, I have heard a lot of folks talk about this little guy as being a moderate quality fire arm. I have found it to be reasonably well made, and have shot some .75 to .5 inch groups at 100 yards with it right out of the box. Having just given it a nice trigger Job, I am looking forward to see how it does at the range. I used the extra high mounts for a 50mm 6.5 x 20 simmons whitetail scope that was gathering dust in the safe. I would agree that you will need the high mounts as a min for bolt clearance.

Thanks for the inputs. I have quite a bit 7.62x39 lying around but am a bit tired of wasting the ammo without really enjoying it, hence the bolt action thought. If I can do 2 to 3 MOA with the cheap stuff meant for an AK, I'm happy.

Onward, I shot a .75 inch group with academy monarch at $4.99 a box with little effort with a shaky bench and a guy rapid firing next to me. I went to my ranch and laid down a few at .5 the next day. It hates all types of the hollow points for some reason giving 2-3 MOA. The factory trigger pull is long and had a lot of creep and about 10 #'s, How ever its is very easy to work on, now its nice and crisp with a short 2 # pull. I posted this this target on another thread , but I think its worth showing what the cheap stuff can do in this gun.

I think ruger does one as well, along with maybe single shots also by nef or h/r.
and remmy did bring in a single shot line called Baikal, that did a nice looking wood single shot. Of course, there is also Saiga; most are synthetic, but if you can find one that has the wood stock, either thumbhole or hogsback, I would so be all over that one...

that being said;
CZ 527; there is no substitute.

Ruger has the Hawkeye in 7.62x39, last I checked. Russian American Armory Company imports a few nice Russian bolt actions, but finding them is very difficult.

Ruger made a model 77 for awhile. If you run across one don't even look at it. A worn out ak of sks will shoot better. Owned one for a short time and was very happy when it sold.

"Ruger made a model 77 for awhile. If you run across one don't even look at it. A worn out ak of sks will shoot better."

Just not true. A blanket statement based on a sample of one, probably using the worst ammo possible. It's ok if you don't like Rugers, but spreading poison benefits no one.

I took my CDNN Rem 799 7.62x39 to the range last week for the first time. Amazing accuracy with MC HP. 3 shots touching each other at 50 yds. i could not believe it. The bolt knob is small to my taste. Bolt binds a little when cycled. Gas vent hole looks awfully small to me and partially blinded by the receiver. How big a vent hole is needed for 7.62x39? Don't think I need K98 mauser size vent holes but is such small vent hole sufficient to handle escape gas? I have no problem with scope interference with high rings for 50mm scope.

I don't mean to hijack the tread either, but what a nice little first time dear rifle a 7.62x39 with the right bullets would make. I like the idea and the looks of the CZ rifles.

yeah, that is how cz makes em, and that size hole is fine; they been doing them that way for years. As for the ruger, my guess is , it was made to likey american/ non euro ammo better, than your normal ruskie/china/ eurotrash 762.39 ammo...

What exactly are you refering to? And how does American x39 differ?

correct-amundo!!! It is not allways 100%, but a lot of american made ammo, or ammo made for american-made rifles, is a tad smaller in diameter than the euro stuff.

@blitzen
I can tell you first hand that a ruger mini 30 using PMC 762 X 39 SN bullets has put a lot of meat in my freezer !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

CZ looks pretty--but I have too many 7.62 X 39 rifles already !!

I believe he is talking about bullet diameter. .308 vs .310/.311

Are you seriously spreading this same myth AGAIN? After all the PM's, corrections in threads, pictures posted proving you wrong and an outright admission by YOURSELF that you were wrong on this subject you intentionally and in full knowledge of the facts still choose to perpetuate this myth anyway

Repeat after me "American made 7.62x39 ammo has never been and never will be loaded with .308" diameter bullets and the ONLY 7.62x39 rifle's with a .308 bore are the first run of ruger mini30's"

.308/.310 they all work in any of my 7.62 X 39 weapons.
These are pretty accurate.:

.... I am then going to have to disagree with myself again; I have seen diameters measured before on american made, with 308..309 diameters.
Sorry you don't like that...
I have also seen diameters on american made bbls, with smaller diameters than on some, MOST, euro/russian/asian made rifles/bbls.
So says Bruce Hornsby.
Maybe things now are more standardized than they were, say 5 years ago, 10 , 15 30 , 50, etc. but most peeps buying euro rifles, well, they have a few years on them. especially the aks. and for mass produced ammo, from euro/russian/asian sights, I would guess they have not changed their diameters in the bullet making process, since they first got their tooling and especially since they also started making the rifles at the same time, and the rifles and the tooling that are still over there, are proly the same age!
So therefore, unless we are talking about new made ammo, that comes from either new companies that are modern' over there' , or is made in America, made for new made american rifles, and I will be generous and include new made eurorifles of 5 years old or less, I am gonna have to disagree with you.
My personal feelings on this, so therefore you cannot prove to me otherwise-- we will just have to agree to disagree on this one.

By the way, that picture above, says Hornady ammo, which is an american company.
So if you are right Krochus, how come it sasy 310 diameter bullets?
