MARSOC approves the Glock 19

MARSOC choices, foreign armed forces training....

It's strange that the MARSOC generals or staff would pick the Glock 19 9mmNATO and not the SIG M11(P228/P229).
The last I heard Smith & Wesson had a huge DoD/military contract to issue 100s of S&W SIGMAs then SD9VEs to Afgan Border Patrol guards & Iraqi police.
This was in the mid 2000s so all of that may have changed, .

The new Safariland AS7 holsters would be a smart pick for Afgan forces or the Marine Raiders assigned to train/advise them.

Sounds like a very smart move on the part of the Marines. They picked a highly reliable weapon that probably is a good bit cheaper than the Sig M11.
Taxpayer dollars pay for this stuff, and Glock is best bang for the buck.

Interesting, ... especially since MARSOC is issuing Colt's M45A1 CQBP, chambered in man-stopping .45acp.

It maybe a case of adding an authorized piece of equipment for vary specific situations.
Like MARSOC units operating with a foreign military that uses glocks.

Denied areas....

Many times, people outside of the SOF(special operations forces) community don't realize that many tier one level units use different weapons in different places. They might use or get foreign weapons to use to conceal their identity or actions if anyone sees or takes pictures/video of them. :uhoh:
I wouldn't see them buying P227R .45acp pistols due to $$$, but S&W SD9VEs or Glock 19s gen 04s makes sense.
MARSOC is fairly new. The non fiction book: Level Zero Heroes what they do & how they ran combat missions in SW Asia.

I wonder why they didnt approve the glock 21 or sig 220 or 227 ?

Based on the 227 and G21, I'm assuming you mean the 220 in 45ACP. I imagine it's becuase ALL handguns suck, and at the end of the day, there's something to be said for having a few more extra bullets and getting shots off a little more faster/accurately.

I'm not bashing the 45 or any of the other bigger cartridges at all, and I know that no one wants to get into the 9vs45vs40vs10mmvs357 thing again, but if I had to guess, I'd say that's the reason they went the 9mm route.

Handguns....

Handguns may suck as you so elaquintly stated  but if part of the reason the USMC wanted Glock 19s was to train or advise the police/security forces so they'd need sidearms more than M4s or SMGs.

More waste of money.

"As nice as the new .45s are, MARSOC troops prefer to carry Glock 19s instead, sources said.

The 1911 was a ground-breaking design that served the U.S. military before World War I until the mid-1980s. The design is still popular, but it's also heavy, prone to malfunction and limited to seven or eight-round magazines, pistols experts have said...

Military pistol experts maintain that the 1911 design, while extremely accurate, requires more training and care than other modern tactical pistols.

Young operators have had trouble with the 1911's beavertail grip safety, according to one former Marine weapons instructor who trained MARSOC members.

Many shooters wearing gloves tend to grip the 1911 too high and do not properly disengage the beavertail grip safety, so the pistol won't fire, he said. A lot of professional shooters who run custom 1911s will disable that beavertail grip safety to avoid this problem, he added.

The 1911 design is also known for feed-way stoppages, a malfunction caused when a round gets stuck feeding into the chamber, experts said. Horizontal and vertical stovepipes – types of malfunctions that occur when an empty shell casing gets caught in the ejection port – are also a problem with the 1911 design."

Apparently they can't make up their mind what they want. It almost sounds like the article was written by a Glock P.R. man.

I asked a few of them about the new 1911's. The consensus seemed to be that they preferred there old 1911's which were pretty much custom built by 1911 nerds. We didn't talk glocks though.

just sad ...:(

we have the M9's made buy a Beretta (Italy) and now Glock (Austria ) what's next, Hugo Hummers ! Jamaican Jeeps !... maybe the MP's should start driving Toyota Prius's on base :what:

just another sell out , I like the 1911's but a Ruger SR9 or a S&W M&P's do everything the Glock would and keep more tax dollar's here in the good old USA ,

I wonder if they will adapted "Cocked & Unlocked "

Agree. So much for "fair & balanced" reporting.

Plus, you don't see those cute little Glock minimeters wearin' the Pony, do you? :scrutiny:

It's got to wear the Pony. GOD SAVE THE PONY!!!!

Really now, it doesn't surprise me that the Marines prefer the Glock 19 to the 40+ ounce M1911. People sometimes forget the Marines/.mil have to carry these things around. A lot. :)

fallow the money , it leaves the country , Toyota is now made here too ,but when the throttle cables were sticking an ABS was failing on some of them , some Guy in JAPAN came out and Said "You Americans are hard on cars " mean time he is raking in cash from us Americans , not saying Glock would do that, I hear they're CS is very good , but there home office (where the Money Goes ) is in Austria , just like Berretta is in Italy

This just makes good sense, when I was in Afghanistan the ODA that lived on our FOB used glock 19's. It works, its simple and its reliable. In the end all handguns do suck, why not choose the one that seems to have the best reliability track record, is commonly found and is in use by host nations?

I have always argued that the selection of the Colt M45A1 CQB was one done more from nostalgia than practicality. It has also been stated and restated by renowned 1911 trainers and pistolsmiths than the 1911 has been surpassed as a combat handgun. Its heavy, and its limited on capacity. Also I argued when this first came out that sense each of these guns came from Colt's custom shop, parts had to be sourced directly and individually for each gun. I felt for the armorers having to keep these weapons running. Dont read me wrong, I love the 1911 and own a few, just not my preference for a combat handgun.

Now with MARSOC being allowed to use G19's, every time there is a 1911 thread on combat applicability we can quit reading the "well the Marine Corps readopted the 1911" argument.

we have the M9's made buy a Beretta (Italy)

All Beretta M9s, including all those in use by the U.S. Military, are made in Accokeek, Maryland, USA. This will soon transition to Gallatin, Tennessee, USA.

I'll just assume you didn't read post 20 ,

where they're made was not my point ,

I would like to see them use a gun made by an American Company , an American OWNED Company like S&W Colt, Ruger, Springfield, ect. ect.

Well, please clarify that you're speaking for yourself - and not for every Marine who's glad he got issued a Colt .45acp CQBP.

And, dude, I hope you're not intimating that MARSOC Marines are so physically feeble protectors of our freedom that they're not up to carrying a 40-ounce railed & light-mounted 1911 .... Hmmm? They aren't a girls j.v. softball team.

Taurus is a Brazillian company.

Glock fanboys must be squealing in delight over this no surprise. My guess is they will be in very few numbers like the new 1911. Glocks are cheap and easy to train people on. It is much easier to train an Iraq or Afghan on a simple pistol than on a 1911 or SIG.
