I switched to a handgun for deer season last year for the first time. I'm using a S&W Model 29-3 with 8 3/8" barrel loaded with Buffalo Bore 240 grain +P lead hollow points. I chrono'd an average of just over 1600fps at the range.
Unfortunately I never got to fire the damn thing this year...
Save a few more pennies and get yourself a Browning X-Bolt. Several versions without wood. Excellent, high quality rifle.
Stainless composite
Stainless carbon fiber
Blue composite
Blue synthetic gray
For me .44 Special for self defense carry ammo (200 grain Corbon DPX) out of a 3" barrel and .44 Magnum for deer hunting (240 grain Buffalo Bore LHPGC) out of an 8 3/8" barrel.
I'd be taking a series look at S&W Model 586's if I were on your quest. If you don't like blue and prefer stainless then the equivelant would be the 686's. If you want a more modern look something like the 4" Model 627 with 8 shot capacity might work.
