Low budget low tech target holder

Reading back through the post, I saw where the OP stated cardboard is not available for him. Either of the above would work with the corrugated political signs. Or, any office building these days probably has a recycle bin for cardboard. I cruise those every now and then, looking for big...

Low budget low tech target holder

If you have access to a table saw, get a pack of 12" or 18" property stakes at the big box store and cut a slot in each. Hammer them into the ground and they make a cardboard holder. I've also got a setup like kcofohio's middle picture, but without the permanent cross piece so that I can use...

AR15 Shim - Nut or Barrel?

Thanks for the replies. The upper I had came assembled. I think it was loose because of the shims (or maybe just laziness). Once I removed them, I torqued the nut a good bit greater than 30ft-lb, but I know I stayed below 80, and was able to get things lined up.

AR15 Shim - Nut or Barrel?

    1. Maybe not headspace, but it would seem that moving the barrel farther away from the bolt would affect something. 2/3. I had an AR upper that came with shims under the barrel nut for an M-Lok hand guard. While shooting, I noticed my RDS was canted, and realized the nut was loose. When I...

AR15 Shim - Nut or Barrel?

I was reviewing various AR15 videos, and saw that many of the uppers were being built with shims going over the chamber-end of the barrel and then being slide into the receiver. This would be used to slightly extend the barrel out of the receiver, affecting the alignment of the notches in the...

    AR10 Brass Forensics

Another update, maybe the last if all goes well after this. I've narrowed it down to two items, possibly a combination. After the last outing above, when I started cleaning it, I could barely pull back the charging handle to remove the carrier. Once I got the bolt out of the bolt carrier, I...

    AR10 Brass Forensics

An update. I took it out today with three brands of ammo (all surplus 7.62x51 including more Malaysian), and three brands of magazine. No jams of any kind. One thing I did notice after trying a slow chambering with the charging handle is in the picture below. There seems to be some impact...

    AR10 Brass Forensics

Thanks for the replies. I guess my two biggest concerns are that I got lucky on one box of ammo, but not the following two, which doesn't seem too likely, or that somehow mounting the scope is putting some stress on the upper and hence the barrel. Again, doesn't seem likely. I'll run some...

    AR10 Brass Forensics

A new-to-me RRA BT3. I'm still troubleshooting the root problem, but I noticed this about all of the spent brass. The two scratches appear to be from the lugs on either side of the feed ramp. The dent appears to be happening during extraction. It's hard to tell from the picture, but it is...

Firing Empty Cases - Experiences and Questions

Murf, supposedly the Yugo ammo was noncorrosive. I did set a record tonight on the number of patches used to clean one barrel, plus I had to bring in a pitch-hitter for my Hoppes #9. Edward, Garands started out primer-actuated as well. Forgotten Weapons has a video of one of his test rifles...

Firing Empty Cases - Experiences and Questions

Tiger, just a quick clarification--the ammo is Yugo 88. The rifle I used to fire the empty cases was a Savage 110. I have not had any of my hunting ammo have the primers back out, but I could look for it the next time I shoot it.

Firing Empty Cases - Experiences and Questions

This is sort of a reloading question since it deals with components, so this seemed the best place for it. Mods feel free to move where better... I had some ammo go bad on me, and I wanted to demolish my remaining stock of it. So, I pulled the bullets, dumped and burned the powder, and decided...

New target stand and targets for almost free!

Depending on how hard the ground is at your range, you could get some property stakes (1x2x12", about $3/12 at the orange home store, which can also be a source for cardboard if you get it before they bale it), use a table saw to cut a 5" deep slot down two of them slightly wider than your...

    New Garand or Old Garand?

CMP just got in a load of 90,000+ Garands from the Philippines and Turkey. Give them some time to get them graded and go with one of those. If you are going to convert to .308, try to get a field grade (if they're available) since you are going to replace the barrel anyway. All of the new...
