I too suffer from "Ooh, shiny!" syndrome. I have a "to buy" list but it is more likely that I go off-list. Last thing I bought was a Seecamp 32, which was definitely off-list.

Well...as of last Monday, the thing at the top of my priority list was a Mark III Hunter. Now it's a Mark IV Hunter. Unfortunately, that's not going to happen before November, so who knows.

If the FFL knows the law, you can get away with two trips. If not and they won't listen to reasonably-presented information about the subject, I find it best to let it go (arguing with them isn't likely to get you your gun any faster) and deal with a different FFL next time.
